Duties, Responsibilities & Other

Key Technical Skills Required:

  • Apply established substation design practices, client standards, and engineering direction to basic and moderately complex Physical Design and/or P&C assignments.
  • Develop assigned Physical Design deliverables such as equipment arrangements, yard layouts, plans, sections, details, grounding, raceways, and cable routing and/or P&C deliverables such as one-lines, three-lines, AC/DC schematics, relay and control panel layouts, wiring diagrams, cable schedules, and communications or SCADA interfaces under guidance.
  • Use AutoCAD proficiently and develop capability with other relevant design, 3D modeling, review, and document-control tools.
  • Identify basic clearance, access, maintenance, constructability, and interdisciplinary coordination concerns for resolution.
  • Perform detailed self-checks and participate in peer and interdisciplinary reviews.

Project Execution and Quality

  • Support complete Physical Design and/or P&C packages for greenfield and brownfield transmission and distribution substations.
  • Gather and evaluate field data, existing drawings, survey information, vendor data, and client standards for assigned design tasks.
  • Coordinate interfaces among Physical Design, P&C, Civil, Structural, Transmission Line, Geotechnical, and vendor information.
  • Support construction questions, Requests for Information, field revisions, and record drawing development under guidance.

Project and Financial Management

  • Own assigned design deliverables or defined portions of a design package from planning through review and final issue.
  • Work within established scope, schedule, budget, and quality requirements and communicate risks or missing information early.
  • Coordinate assigned work with Project Engineers, Senior Designers, Drafters, vendors, and other disciplines.
  • Participate in project meetings and document design decisions, action items, and review comments affecting assigned work.

Training and Development

  • Continue development in substation design fundamentals, applicable standards, constructability, quality, and client-specific requirements.
  • Provide day-to-day drafting guidance to Entry Level Drafters and Drafters when assigned.
  • Develop working capability across the technical topics for the assigned track. Physical Design may include equipment arrangement plans and yard layouts, plans, section cuts, elevations, and physical details, grounding and lightning protection drawings, raceway layouts, conduit plans, cable routing, and cable schedules, control building layouts and auxiliary AC/DC station service interfaces, foundation, structural steel, civil, and equipment vendor interfaces, construction details, revisions, and record drawings. P&C may include one-lines and three-lines, AC/DC schematics, protective relay and control panel arrangements, panel and equipment wiring diagrams, cable and connection schedules, communications, SCADA, and station-control interfaces, drawing revisions, cutovers, and record drawings.

Compliance, Safety, and Standards

  • Comply with KCI policies, ISO requirements, Quality Management Systems, client standards, and applicable industry practices.
  • Identify, implement, and follow safe working practices in the office and during field or construction-site activities.
  • Perform work within assigned authority and obtain appropriate engineering review and approval for design decisions.

Education and/or Work Experience Preferred:

  • At least 1 year of substation Physical Design and/or P&C experience on projects from 34.5 kV through 500 kV.
  • Experience with AutoCAD and exposure to AutoCAD Electrical, MicroStation, OpenUtilities Substation, Autodesk Inventor, Bluebeam, Navisworks, ProjectWise, or Google Earth, as applicable to the assigned track.
  • Working knowledge of IEEE, NESC, NEC, utility standards, client specifications, and substation constructability principles.

Certificates, Licenses, and/or Registrations Preferred:

  • Relevant CAD, design software, utility, safety, or technical training certifications.

This role will work independently with limited oversite, but under supervision for mentorship, guidance and training.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent, and seven years relevant work experience, or an Associate’s Degree and five years of distribution design- related work experience.

Valid driver’s license.

Pre-employment drug screening and background check are conditions of employment. Motor vehicle checks may be required based upon position.
