Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • 4 or more years of related engineering experience.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class D License.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and written communication skills.
  • This position may be subject to assessment of skills, job match and/or aptitude.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of substation design, equipment ratings, and protection systems, including relay fundamentals and coordination concepts.
  • Experience with power system analysis and relay/short-circuit studies using tools such as ASPEN, ETAP, SKM, or PSCAD.
  • Proven ability to develop and support NERC compliance documentation, with working knowledge of applicable standards (e.g., FAC, PRC) and protection maintenance practices.

What You’ll Do

This role delivers end‑to‑end substation engineering including design, analysis, operational support, and NERC compliance for high‑ and medium‑voltage assets. You’ll partner across engineering, operations, and compliance to ensure accurate designs, reliable performance, and audit‑ready documentation.

  • Design and support substation and wind site systems (transformers, breakers, bus, grounding, protection & control, lines and feeders).
  • Lead studies, drawings, and specs (one‑lines, schematics, short‑circuit, arc‑flash, coordination) and support projects through commissioning.
  • Ensure NERC compliance (FAC, PRC, applicable CIP) through accurate ratings, settings, and audit‑ready documentation.
  • Support operations with event analysis, collaborate cross‑functionally, and drive standards, safety, and continuous improvement.

Working Conditions

  • Combination of office and field work; periodic substation site visits required.
  • Must be able to work safely around energized high‑voltage equipment.
  • Occasional after‑hours or emergency response support.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected annual compensation range for this position is $82,000 - $102,000. Compensation offered to the selected candidate will vary depending on relevant knowledge, skills, training, experience, and market conditions.
