Your Opportunity

Stantec’s Energy team in western Canada is currently offering exciting opportunities for Electrical Engineers to work on a variety of utilities substation projects throughout Western Canada. The Substations Electrical Engineering team is looking to fill the role of an Electrical Engineering Team Lead. Reporting to the Substation Engineering Manager, the Team Lead will lead a team of Electrical engineers, designers and subcontractors. This technical leadership role is ideal for someone with a passion for building strong teams.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Ensure client expectations related to project scope are clearly understood, met, and exceeded.
  • Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to team members; foster initiative, collaboration, and professional growth.
  • Champion a strong safety culture by promoting safe work practices and ensuring compliance with all safety regulations.
  • Provide technical leadership as a subject matter expert, offering professional engineering advice within and beyond the department.
  • Prepare and review technical reports, presentations, standards, specifications, and engineering documentation.
  • Perform engineering studies such as power flow, short circuit, grounding, lightning protection, insulation coordination, TRV, cable ampacity, rigid and flexible bus, lighting, etc.
  • Lead detailed design of substations, including switchyard layouts, sections, grounding plan/details, cable routing, AC/DC distribution, major equipment specifications, single line diagrams, schematics, wiring diagrams, marking, design calculations, etc.
  • Develop technical specifications for major equipment, construction, testing, and commissioning.
  • Provide technical support during procurement, construction, and commissioning phases.
  • Support proposal development, project planning, and cost estimation.
  • Mentor and support junior engineers and designers.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to resolve complex technical challenges.
  • Ensure adherence to internal QA/QC processes to deliver high-quality engineering services.
  • Conduct site visits to verify existing installation, define project scope, prepare for detailed design, and provide construction site supports as required.

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Experience in CYMCAP, ETAP, CDEGS, WinIGS, Autodesk Inventor is an asset.
  • Experience in Microsoft (MS) Office Suite, Bluebeam/Adobe Acrobat, & AutoCAD.
  • Previous experience working with or at BC Hydro is an asset.
  • Equipment engineering experience is an asset.
  • Willing and able to travel occasionally when required.
  • Self-motivated, team-oriented, efficient, and a good communicator.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Excellent communication abilities with a keen eye for detail. Ability to work with others in a collaborative team environment.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • 8+ years progressive and comprehensive engineering experience in the transmission and distribution utility business particularly in the design, engineering and maintenance of Substation.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and timelines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively work and collaborate with a range of internal and external customers.

Office Location and Schedule

  • Typical office environment working with computers.
  • Stantec offers a flexible work environment (a hybrid model of working in the office and at home).
  • Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
  • Location – Vancouver / Edmonton
