Johnson Controls is looking for an Industrial Refrigeration SME who can technically lead our most complex projects through commissioning and act as Technical Authority across the portfolio. You will support project engineers and PMs with practical know-how, troubleshoot critical issues during start-up, and provide escalation support for operational issues when needed—while mentoring younger colleagues. English or German required (other language a plus). No degree required—proven industrial refrigeration experience matters.
Key Responsibilities
· Lead technically the most complex industrial refrigeration projects (NH₃ focus) through design, build coordination and commissioning; ensure first-time-right start-up and acceptance.
· Act as Technical Authority across the portfolio: provide design reviews, risk assessments, and approvals/waivers for critical decisions and changes.
· Support project engineers and project managers with practical field know-how: equipment selection, P&IDs, sizing, piping concepts, defrost strategy, oil management, safety functions, and controls concepts.
· Operational escalation support (post-commissioning): assist operations/service teams in diagnosing and resolving complex plant issues; drive structured root cause analysis (RCA)
· Mentor and coach younger colleagues through reviews, on-the-job training, and short technical sessions; build capability across the team.
· Represent Johnson Controls in technical discussions with customers, contractors, and vendors; support FAT/SAT and supplier clarifications.
Required Qualifications
· Extensive hands-on experience in industrial refrigeration with strong focus on NH₃; ideally 20 + years (depth and relevance matter most).
· Proven ability to deliver independently: design decisions, commissioning/start-up troubleshooting, and complex fault finding in operating plants.
· Strong ability to read and challenge P&IDs and technical documentation; practical understanding of system behavior and failure modes.
· No formal degree required; vocational/technician background or engineering education are both acceptable—proven experience is key.
· Experience with natural refrigerants, especially ammonia is a strong plus
· Language: fluent in English or German; the other language is a plus.
