Student employees in the Medical Humanities Department are an integral part of our team and serve as ambassadors for the department. As the first point of contact for many visitors, office assistants help create a welcoming and professional environment while supporting the daily operations of the department.
Knowledge of the Medical Humanities curriculum and degree requirements is an important aspect of this position. The office assistant serves a variety of constituents, including current and prospective students, faculty, staff, university administrators, alumni, and community healthcare professionals.
Proficiency with Canva, Canvas, Outlook, social media platforms, and standard office technology is required. Applicants should be dependable, organized, creative, professional, and demonstrate initiative. A well-groomed, professional appearance is expected. Applicants must be a Medical Humanities major or minor to be considered.
Because student employees have access to sensitive information, maintaining the confidentiality of departmental records and conversations is an essential responsibility of this position.
This position offers students a unique opportunity to interact with and build professional relationships with faculty, healthcare professionals, alumni, and other members of the medical community while contributing to the mission of the Medical Humanities Department.
Key Responsibilities
• Greet and assist visitors, faculty, staff, current students, and prospective students in a friendly and professional manner.
• Perform daily administrative and office tasks, including answering phones, responding to emails, copying, scanning, filing, and restocking office supplies and copy paper.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and professional office environment, including organizing shared spaces, washing shared kitchen items, and restocking the coffee station, refrigerator, and snacks.
• Provide course support for faculty as needed, including entering grades and attendance in Canvas, making copies, scanning documents, and preparing course materials.
• Design promotional materials, event flyers, and course graphics using Canva.
• Assist with departmental events, activities, special projects, and prospective student visits.
• Assist the department's social media manager by creating content, taking photographs, and supporting departmental social media initiatives.
• Adhere to the department's dress code and all office policies.
• Maintain regular, punctual, and reliable attendance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
