University Description:
The University of San Diego, an engaged and contemporary Catholic institution, was founded by the Diocese of San Diego and the Society of the Sacred Heart in 1949. Governed by an independent board of trustees since 1972, USD remains committed to a liberal arts education grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition and the pursuit of truth, goodness and beauty. Inspired by this centuries old tradition of Catholic higher education, the University welcomes people of all faith traditions and any, or no, religious background. The future success of USD relies on the contributions of those who seek to foster the development of engaged global citizens and an earnest confrontation of humanity’s urgent challenges
Detailed Description:
This is a full-time temporary, benefit-based position with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2027. The appointment is renewable at the discretion of the University and dependent upon performance and continued funding.
The Student Success Coordinator plays a crucial role in supporting the mission of BiGI within SOLES. The coordinator will be responsible for implementing strategies to enhance student engagement, academic success, and overall student experience within the BiGI program. This role demands a proactive approach to student support, excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong commitment to advocacy for underrepresented students.
Program Description:
BiGI was created by Dr. Kimberly A. White-Smith, Dean of the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) at the University of San Diego (USD), and Pamela Gray Payton, Vice President and Chief Impact and Partnership Officer at the San Diego Foundation, in response to long-standing disparities in educational access, opportunity and outcomes experienced by the Black community in San Diego County. BiGI is open to and serves all students who face disproportionality in educational access and outcomes.
The inequitable distribution of highly qualified teachers, supportive learning environments and essential academic resources has historically limited pathways to educational attainment for too many students. These longstanding gaps served as BiGI’s north star, guiding the creation of a comprehensive model designed to close opportunity disparities for those disproportionately affected.
These disparities often obscure or suppress the inherent genius within children, making it harder for their gifts, talents and possibilities to be fully recognized and nurtured. BiGI exists to illuminate that genius. Our work is to cultivate the brilliance that resides in every young person and to collaborate with school leaders, teachers and caregivers to build new possibilities for the future where these scholars can truly shine.
BiGI prepares sixth through 12th grade students to graduate from high school and pursue college or university — including USD — with the confidence, preparation and skills needed to achieve their academic and career aspirations.
