Makerspace Technology Specialist

Provide direct support for the Ithaca College Makerspace, a unit within IT where users collaborate, learn and explore Makerspace technology in a welcoming, multidisciplinary environment. Staff the IC Makerspace and Digital Media Lab (DML), provide support to clients, conduct training tutorials and workshops, and assist with maintaining the spaces. The role is highly creative and offers the opportunity for deep hands-on experience with Makerspace tools and technology.

  • Time Commitment Approximately 8-12 hours/week (2 hour blocks of time or more)
  • Hours Monday – Friday, 11am – 7pm. Saturdays: 12pm – 4pm

  • Location Friends Hall 102 – Makerspace, Job 102 – Digital Media Lab
  • Pay Rate $16.00/hr

Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities

  • Consult with and assist students, staff and faculty with creative projects in the Makerspace and Digital Media Lab. Use of the space is both recreational and academic in nature.
  • Teach users basic operation of Makerspace technology including sewing machines, Cricut die-cutting, hand-held power tools, 3D printing, laser cutting.
  • Teach and assist clients in preparing digital files and models for laser cutting, Cricut cutting, button making, and 3D printing.
  • Plan and execute workshops and events based on personal interest and Makerspace needs.
  • Manage photo/video equipment reservations in the Digital Media Lab.
  • Assist users in the podcast studio, photo studio, and with virtual reality experiences.
  • Maintain cleanliness and tidiness in the labs.
  • Troubleshoot software and hardware issues on Mac, PC, and Makerspace equipment, and elevate issues to supervisor when necessary.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols and ensure users adhere to all safety protocols.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Must be currently enrolled as a student at Ithaca College.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently.
  • Able to communicate with coworkers and supervisor verbally and over Microsoft Teams
  • Ability to adhere to lab safety protocols.
  • Reliability; able to communicate in advance before missing a work shift.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Customer service experience.
  • Desire to learn new technology and creative skills.
  • Willingness to teach and help others.
  • Ability to create a welcoming environment for all users in the Makerspace and Digital Media Lab.
  • Experience with Makerspace technologies such as laser cutting, 3D Printing, sewing, and crafts is a plus.
  • Experience with photo, video, audio and virtual reality equipment and software a plus.
  • Experience with software including Adobe Illustrator and Suite, 3D modeling software, and Canva a plus.

We are seeking a team with a variety of skills and experiences. It is not necessary for applicants to have experience in all the above areas. Training will be provided.
