Student Employment Manager - University Housing

University Housing – Dining Services

(Anticipated start date is September 2026)


University Housing provides an essential element of the Illinois experience, with hundreds of employees across seven units working together to build and maintain safe, healthy and welcoming homes for our residents. Dining Services focuses on making sure our residents are well served and eating tasty, sustainable and healthy meals. At the same time, our team provides high-end catering options that can service weddings, events and parties. Staff within our dining team also work on nutrition, operations, training, menu planning and so much more. While University Housing employs over 1,000 student staff each year, hundreds of those student staff members work on the dining staff and are a key part of the team.
Primary responsibilities include hiring student staff, development and implementation of training for student employees, student supervisors, and full-time Management and management of the student discipline program. Ensures compliance with state, university, OSHA and Dining Services requirements. Supervisors engage in and implement University Housing's inclusion, culture and climate initiatives.

Duties & Responsibilities

Administration

  • Ensures adequate staffing for all dining units.
  • Actively recruits and hires new student employees using print, digital media, social media and in person.
  • Effectively manages the application and onboarding process for student employees.
  • Assists in the further development of the Housing Employment System (online HR program).
  • Coordinates and implements policies and procedures for student employees within Dining Services.
  • Coordinates work schedules for student employees using electronic scheduling system.
  • Conducts annual review and updates of the Student Employee Handbook.
  • Analyzes and reports student employment statistics to Executive Team and Dining Management team.
  • Maintains accurate records for student employees including applications and training records.
  • Reviews and analyzes productivity, financial and retention reports and suggests corrective action.
  • Assists in organizational development; participates in planning future installations; studies and recommends student staffing needs.

Training

  • Trains student employees in the delivery of services, which includes the safe handling and presentation of food, setting up for catering events (formal and informal), providing good customer service, and maintaining the general appearance of a dining room or retail location.
  • Develops classroom, on-the-job and online training materials for student employees and those who work with students in the dining units.
  • Works with the Culinary Training Coordinator to develop general training materials for all of Dining.
  • Coordinates mandatory Illinois food handler training, safety, and proper maintenance training programs for student employees.
  • Counsels employees and supervisors concerning departmental objectives for student employees.
  • Works with International Student Services to address the special needs of international student employees.

Supervision

  • Provides direct supervision of students working `within the student employment office.
  • Oversees student employee discipline and serves as the first step in the discipline appeal process.
  • Oversees evaluation process for all student employees, develops evaluation system, and execute with supervisors.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

1. High School Diploma or equivalent.

2. Any one or combination totaling six (6) years (72 months) from the categories below:

A. Coursework in business, dietetics, culinary arts, food science, nutrition, hospitality, hotel, catering, restaurant, or institutional management, or a closely related field as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:

  • 30 semester hours equals one (1) year (12 months)
  • Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen months (18
    months)
  • 90 semester hours equals two (2) years (24 months)
  • Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three
    (3) years (36 months)

B. Food service management work experience.

Appointment Information

This is a 100% full-time Civil Service 0038 - Food Service Administrator III position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is in September 2026

The
budgeted salary range for the position is $51,831 to $62,500. We strive to provide a competitive salary,
considering factors such as available market data, internal equity, candidate
experience and qualifications, and budget
constraints. The final salary offer will be determined through a thorough
assessment of these elements.

Work Schedule

This position will be expected to work at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus on a full-time basis per the University’s Workplace Flexibility policy
