Job context

The College of Social Sciences at the University of Birmingham is dedicated to enhancing the academic and social experiences of its students. This role, open to undergraduate and postgraduate students within the College, plays a crucial part in achieving this mission. Our College encompasses various schools, each committed to academic excellence and the promotion of a diverse and inclusive community.

This role is open to Undergraduate and Postgraduate students studying in the College of Social Sciences.

As a Student Voice & Partnership Ambassador, you will have the opportunity to shape and improve the student experience by contributing to five key projects throughout the year:

• Welcome Week and Student Belonging
• National Student Survey (NSS) and Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey (PTES)
• Module Feedback and Closing the Feedback Loop
• Summer Term Activities
• Student Open Clinics

In this role, you'll act as a link between students and staff, helping to ensure student voices are heard and acted upon.

You will:

• Share student views, needs and priorities with staff
• Highlight barriers or challenges that may affect students and suggest ways to address them
• Bring a student perspective to discussions and help challenge assumptions constructively
• Work with staff to design activities, communications and resources that are relevant and engaging for students
• Help shape project goals and contribute ideas for measuring success
• Promote events, activities and opportunities through your student networks
• Support events by giving presentations, welcoming attendees and encouraging participation
• Help students find and access the support and services available to them
• Gather feedback and insights from the wider student community
• Help ensure students can see how their feedback leads to real change

Specific tasks related to each of the projects are below.

Successful applicants will take part in training in September, where everything you need to get started will be explained, including an introduction to the role, an overview of the projects, and guidance on your responsibilities.

All Student Voice & Partnership Ambassadors will be expected to be available between 19 and 25 September 2026 to support activities and help welcome new students to the University.

This is a great opportunity to develop communication, leadership and teamwork skills, gain experience working with university staff, enhance your CV, and make a real difference to the student experience for both current and future students.

Main duties

Project 1: Welcome Week and Helping New Students Feel They Belong

You will work with staff to improve Welcome Week and support students as they settle into university life.

You will:

• Take part in induction sessions, talks and student panels
• Support networking and social activities
• Spot areas where students may be receiving too much, too little or unclear information
• Gather feedback from students during and after Welcome Week
• Help ensure activities are inclusive and accessible for different student groups
• Suggest improvements for future Welcome Weeks

Project 2: Student Surveys (NSS and PTES)

Help students understand why their feedback matters and encourage meaningful participation in key student surveys.

You will:

• Advise on how and when survey messages are shared with students
• Identify reasons why some students may not take part
• Encourage students to give honest and constructive feedback
• Show how student feedback has led to positive changes
• Support events and activities that raise awareness of the surveys
• Recommend ways to improve future campaigns

Project 3: Module Feedback and Making Change Visible

Help improve module feedback processes and ensure students can see how their feedback makes a difference.

You will:

• Identify barriers that stop students completing Module Evaluation Questionnaires (MEQs)
• Help design clear and student-friendly communications
• Encourage constructive and respectful feedback
• Support Schools in communicating what changes have been made as a result of feedback
• Help create a consistent approach for sharing outcomes with students
• Evaluate whether students understand and recognise improvements made

Project 4: Summer Term Activities

Help shape activities and opportunities that students want to see during the Summer Term.

You will:

• Identify student interests and priorities
• Co-design activities with School and College staff
• Help deliver activities and encourage student participation
• Promote opportunities through your student networks
• Gather feedback on student experiences
• Suggest improvements for future Summer Term programmes

Project 5: Student Open Clinics

Help create welcoming opportunities for students to share ideas, concerns and feedback.

You will:

• Promote clinics to fellow students
• Help create an informal, friendly and inclusive environment
• Identify barriers that might prevent students attending
• Encourage positive student engagement and discussion
• Highlight common themes and issues raised by students
• Help evaluate the impact of the clinics
• Recommend improvements for future sessions

Required knowledge, skills, qualifications & experience

• Current student studying a College of Social Sciences subject (only applications from disciplines within the Schools of Education, Government, Business, and Social Policy will be considered)
• Enthusiasm for the University, the College, and your area of study
• Knowledge of, or the ability to quickly develop an understanding of, the University, campus, and available student support services
• An understanding of the lived experiences of people from marginalised or minoritised groups, and a willingness to listen and learn about others' experiences
• Ability to come up with creative solutions when solving problems
• Effective written and verbal communication skills are essential for this role
• Customer service skills including the ability to stay calm, friendly, and helpful when interacting with people and under pressure
• A professional approach to work and communication is required
• Reliable, punctual, organised and conscientious
• Confident and comfortable appearing on camera

Further details

Hours for this role will be ad-hoc with a maximum of 15 hours/week. This role will be initially set up as a 13-week casual contract, with the expectation of extension throughout the 2026-2027 academic year.
