The Center for the American Experience (CAE) at The New School explores the nation’s complex past and present, as well as its role in the world and in our lives. CAE fosters bold scholarly, creative, and civic engagement aimed at analyzing, understanding, and advancing the United States’ core values—among them democracy, freedom, equality, pluralism, and pragmatism. We are seeking a Student Assistant Specialist to support CAE’s administrative operations, including event scheduling, room reservations, coordinating communications with speakers, and managing director calendars.


CORE CAPABILITIES, PRIMARY DUTIES, AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Event Planning & Logistics

  • Assist with scheduling events, reserving rooms, coordinating setup needs, and confirming event details such as timing, location, and required equipment.

Speaker Coordination

  • Communicate with invited speakers to confirm participation

  • Share event details

  • Coordinate travel or accommodations if needed, and serve as a point of contact before and during events.

Director Calendar Management

  • Maintain and coordinate director schedules by organizing meetings and resolving conflicts

  • Send calendar invitations, creating Zoom links, and ensuring timely updates.

Task & Project Tracking

  • Monitor and update CAE’s to-do list by tracking deadlines, prioritizing tasks, and following up on outstanding items to ensure smooth daily operations.

Email & Communications Management

  • Sort and distribute incoming emails

  • Respond to routine inquiries and flag priority messages

  • Help maintain organized and timely communication flow.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Currently enrolled at The New School as an undergraduate or graduate student.

  • Able to prioritize, problem-solve, manage diverse activities, and meet deadlines autonomously.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills with experience in external communication.

  • Ability to communicate to an executive, highly experienced professionals from a wide range of industries, roles, backgrounds, cultures and time zones.

  • Highly organized, self-sufficient and detail-oriented.

  • Proficient with MS Office and Google Apps.


Work Mode
This position is primarily in-person and is based on campus to support effective in-person collaboration and engagement. Hybrid work arrangements may be considered on a case-by-case basis, depending on the nature of the role and operational needs. Any such arrangement must be discussed and approved in advance by the appropriate division lead or their designee. #LI-DNI


Hourly Rate
$ 20.00/hour
