Optical material acquisition tries to record and reproduce physically realistic effects of different materials, especially their view and light dependence.
The challenge is to meet the best tradeoff between the highest realism which comes at massive data consumption and performance requirements on one side, and approximations on the other, which run in real-time but need to be optimized to maintain sufficient realism.
What you will do
The tasks focus on existing optical material scanning systems, which generate a material representation using a hemisphere of light directions and one to many viewing directions, and already produce a 3D material rendering of arbitrary objects.
Tasks range from using the systems to acquire optical material behavior and generate renderings, over extension and optimization of already implemented methods of the systems towards better performance and visual quality, to adding support for existing 3D frameworks such as the Unity Engine.
The task spectrum allows for familiarizing with the domain of optical material behavior acquisition at a decent pace.

The working time consists of 10-20 hours per week. The position is initially limited to three months, an extension is intended.
