Structural Steel Field Surveyor

Location: Maryland or Virginia | Field-Based

Job Type: Direct Hire

Pay: Starting at $30/hour, higher depending on experience

Position Overview

We are hiring a Field Surveyor to support structural and miscellaneous steel work throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. This position focuses on field measurements, layout, elevations, alignment, and survey documentation to help ensure steel is installed accurately.

The role is primarily performed at active construction sites and requires regular travel and comfort working at elevated locations.

Field Responsibilities

• Collect and verify construction measurements using professional surveying equipment.
• Establish control lines, column locations, and anchor rod positions.
• Check elevations, embed alignment, structural orientation, and plumbness.
• Prepare and maintain as-built drawings and field documentation.
• Provide layout and alignment support during structural steel erection.
• Coordinate with other trades to maintain accurate positioning and installation.
• Assist with installation of structural and miscellaneous metals, including stairs and shafts.
• Survey slopes, grades, and layouts for structural and miscellaneous steel.
• Use total stations or similar surveying equipment to complete field measurements.
• Apply applicable AISC standards for building alignment and orientation.
• Use Trimble, Bluebeam, CAD, and Microsoft Office as part of field and project documentation.
• Follow site safety requirements and promote safe work practices.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of experience in structural steel erection, field surveying, or a related role.
• Experience with surveying slopes, grades, and structural/miscellaneous metal layouts.
• Proficiency with a total station or comparable surveying equipment.
• Knowledge of AISC standards related to building alignment and orientation.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
• Ability to communicate effectively with field crews, trades, and project teams.
• Willingness and ability to travel regularly between job sites throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
• Comfortable working at heights, including aerial lifts and elevated steel floors.

Travel & Work Environment

• Primarily field-based with regular travel to construction sites.
• Occasional work at office or shop locations for meetings and training.
• Company vehicle and gas card provided for work-related travel.
