Structural Steel CNC Operator

About the role

The Structural Steel CNC Operator plays a vital role in ensuring efficiency and accuracy of our fabrication process. This is a varied role and involves much more than just machine operation, you will be undertaking procurement, computer programming, production scheduling and ensuring quality control throughout the process.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Utilise the BridgeFAB Management System (BMS) to manage project progress, record work, and ensure consistent, high‑quality outcomes.
  • Liaise with the team to coordinate daily workshop activities and maintain production flow.
  • Set up and program the cutting robot for a variety of patterns, perform necessary file conversions, and adjust programs to meet project specifications.
  • Operate plate cutting lasers and plasma cutters, as well as shaft cutting plasma machines, to deliver accurate and efficient CNC cutting. Nest shafts and plates efficiently to maximise steel yield and reduce material waste.
  • Carry out regular inspections of cut components to verify they meet quality standards and project tolerances. Undertake procurement of materials by obtaining a minimum of two quotes, ensuring the most cost‑effective option for current production dates.
  • Oversee quality control of incoming material delivery to ensure it meets the required standards.
  • Perform daily pre-start maintenance, including cleaning and servicing on the plasma coping robot and troubleshoot operational issues to minimise downtime.
  • Communicate and collaborate with supervisors, and fabricators and to maintain smooth workflow and ensure projects are completed on time.
  • Prepare and submit Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) regularly for steel quality assurance and coordinate with project managers to ensure detailing compliance.
  • Obtain and correctly assign heat certificates for all steel and ensure records are kept in Trello.
  • Prioritise and produce steel required for site variations promptly to meet site needs.
  • Follow all safety protocols and site procedures to maintain a safe working environment for yourself and colleagues.
  • Provide workshop support to troubleshoot discrepancies and defects, develop corrective systems, and implement measures to prevent recurrence.

About you

We are seeking a collaborative and experienced team player with a strong background in structural steel and machine operations. On-the-job training is provided, as this role takes time to master. You will gain exposure to all facets of the role over several months, ensuring you are set up for success.

We are looking for someone who has the following:

  • Experience as a machine operator or in a related manufacturing/fabrication role; experience with Daito plasma coping robots is highly regarded
  • Relevant technical training or certifications in welding, machining, or related disciplines (preferred) with a strong understanding of structural steel fabrication processes and techniques
  • You are organised and capable of maintaining high standards of work within the workshop.
  • You are reliable and show up for the team, this role plays a vital role in ensuring our projects are completed on time.
  • Is proficient in programming and troubleshooting robotic systems, with advanced computer skills (ProNest, OEM software, Outlook, Excel, File Explorer)
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintains high attention to detail and consistently produces quality work
  • Someone who is methodical with strong problem-solving and critical thinking skill.
  • Communicates effectively and builds strong relationships at all levels within a manufacturing or workshop setting
  • Is physically fit, able to follow manual handling procedures and lift 20kg when required
  • Has a safety-first mindset, always following procedures, wearing PPE, and contributing to a safe working environment
