Job Description

Tatu City is seeking a technically proficient and detail-oriented Structural Field Engineer to join the Jabali Towers site team. This is a hands-on, site-based role focused on ensuring that all structural elements of the project are executed in precise accordance with the design specifications and the highest standards of quality and safety. The Structural Field Engineer will be responsible for the day-to-day inspection and supervision of structural works, providing critical technical support to the construction team for this complex high-rise project.

Key Responsibilities

On-Site Technical Supervision & Quality Assurance:

  • Serve as the primary on-site technical expert for all structural works, including deep foundations, reinforced concrete, post-tensioning systems, and structural steel erection.
  • Conduct rigorous daily inspections of all structural activities, including rebar placement, formwork installation, concrete pouring, and post-tensioning stressing, to ensure strict compliance with approved drawings and technical specifications.
  • Implement and enforce the project's Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) program for all structural components, meticulously documenting all inspections, tests, and any non-conformance issues.
  • Review and provide technical approval for contractor submittals, including shop drawings, material certificates, concrete mix designs, and method statements.
  • Proactively identify potential structural issues on-site and work with the contractor and design teams to implement timely and effective solutions.

Coordination & Problem-Solving:

  • Interpret complex structural drawings and specifications to provide clear guidance to the contractor's site team.
  • Liaise directly with the design consultants to resolve technical queries (RFIs) and discrepancies discovered during construction.
  • Coordinate with other discipline field engineers (e.g., MEP, Architectural) to ensure that all structural embedment’s, block-outs, and penetrations are correctly located and installed.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate site records, including daily progress reports, inspection logs, and as-built information related to structural works.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Champion a culture of safety for all structural works, with a particular focus on formwork stability, working at height, and crane operations.
  • Ensure all construction activities are in full compliance with Kenyan building codes, local authority regulations, and international best practices (e.g., ACI, AISC).
  • Monitor contractor operations to ensure adherence to approved health and safety plans and procedures.

Requirements

Skills and Experience:

  • Education: A bachelor’s degree in civil or Structural Engineering from an internationally recognized university is essential.
  • Experience: A minimum of 8-12 years of direct, post-graduate experience as a site-based structural engineer on large-scale construction projects. A proven track record on high-rise buildings (20+ storeys) is mandatory.
  • Industry Background: Extensive hands-on experience working for major international main contractors or construction supervision consultants is critical. Experience on giga projects or with leading EPC firms like Bechtel is a significant advantage.
  • International Exposure: Demonstrable, hands-on international project experience in challenging construction environments is essential.
  • Technical Proficiency: Expert knowledge of structural engineering principles and modern construction methodologies for high-rise buildings.
  • Must be highly skilled in reading and interpreting complex structural drawings and specifications. Proficiency in using relevant software like AutoCAD and basic structural analysis tools is required.
  • Codes and Standards: Working knowledge of international design codes such as ACI 318, AISC, and ASCE 7 is required.
