Job Description

A nationally recognized architecture, engineering, and planning firm, with 12 offices across the U.S., is seeking a creative and driven Structural Engineer to join their collaborative team in either the Santa Monica or Sacramento office. The ideal candidate is design-focused, highly technical, and thrives within an interdisciplinary, team-oriented environment.

As a Structural Project Engineer, you’ll play a key role in delivering innovative and impactful projects across a diverse range of building types. You’ll address complex structural challenges and develop solutions that advance design excellence, performance, and sustainability.

The company champions a culture that encourages curiosity, collaboration, and diverse perspectives, striving to create meaningful impact for clients, communities, and team members alike.

Engineers at the firm benefit from opportunities to work across multiple sectors—including advanced laboratories, healthcare facilities, academic campuses, performance spaces, museums, civic buildings, and corporate headquarters—fostering professional growth and continuous learning.

In this role, you will:

  • Take charge of structural design for small to mid-sized buildings while playing an integral role on larger, multifaceted projects.

  • Perform detailed structural analysis and design using steel, concrete, wood, and masonry, ensuring compliance with California Building Code, ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, and other relevant standards.

  • Prepare and review structural calculations, technical reports, and construction documentation—including plans, sections, and details.

  • Collaborate closely with architects, MEP engineers, and other disciplines to deliver coordinated and effective design solutions.

  • Oversee drawing reviews and mark-ups; work with BIM technicians to develop accurate, well-coordinated documentation.

  • Conduct regular site visits for structural observations, support construction administration, and respond to RFIs, submittals, and field questions.

  • Participate in quality control processes ensuring deliverables meet firm and client expectations.

  • Support the proposal and fee estimation process for new projects and additional services.

  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and interns on both technical design and professional growth.

  • Stay abreast of evolving industry trends, code updates, and sustainable design best practices, including embodied carbon reduction and high-performance buildings.

Responsibilities

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an accredited institution; Master’s degree preferred.

  • 5–7 years of experience in building structural design, focusing on steel, concrete, wood, and/or masonry systems.

  • Active California Professional Engineer (PE) license.

  • In-depth knowledge of California Building Code (CBC), ASCE 7, ACI, AISC, and related structural standards.

  • Proficiency in structural analysis and design software such as ETABS, SAP, SAFE, RAM, RISA, and Enercalc.

  • Working knowledge of Revit (BIM environment).

  • Experience coordinating multidisciplinary teams, including architects and MEP engineers.

  • Demonstrated ability to prepare and review structural calculations, drawings, and specifications.

  • Hands-on experience with construction administration (site visits, RFIs, submittals).

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for effective technical discussion and documentation.

  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.

  • Collaborative mindset and a commitment to mentoring and supporting junior team members.
