Job Description

Overview

We are designing the grid of the future!

The Structural Designer /Technologist is responsible for developing detailed structural drawings for substations, transmission lines, BESS facilities, and other energy infrastructure projects.

Working under the guidance of a structural engineer, this role will translate engineering calculations, design inputs, and markups into accurate, coordinated drawing packages. Candidates with an engineering technology background or junior structural engineering experience are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

How you can make an impact:

  • Prepare structural plans, sections, schedules, and details for reinforced-concrete foundations, steel structures, and equipment supports.
  • Develop foundation layouts and details for transformers, electrical equipment, control buildings, BESS units, transmission poles, substation gantries, and oil containment structures.
  • Prepare reinforcement and anchorage details, including reinforcing bar schedules, anchor bolts, base plates, and bolted or welded connections.
  • Interpret engineering calculations and output from structural analysis software, such as RISA-3D or SAP2000, to develop drawings under the supervising engineer’s direction.
  • Assist with basic structural calculations, material quantities, and design checks appropriate to experience and assigned responsibilities.
  • Incorporate engineering markups, geotechnical recommendations, vendor drawings, and project specifications into structural deliverables.
  • Coordinate with civil and electrical teams to confirm equipment locations, foundation elevations, clearances, loading information, and interface requirements.
  • Identify drawing discrepancies and coordination issues, and work with the project engineer to resolve them.
  • Assist with reviews of shop drawings, fabrication drawings, and vendor submittals, documenting discrepancies for the project engineer’s review.
  • Support preparation of permit submissions and 30%, 60%, 90%, issued-for-construction (IFC), and as-built drawing packages.
  • Perform drawing checks for completeness, dimensional accuracy, consistency, and compliance with project CAD and detailing standards.
  • Maintain organized project files, drawing references, and revision records, and contribute to the development of standard details and drawing templates.

Qualifications

Bring your passion, here's what’s needed:

  • Diploma in Civil or Structural Engineering Technology, bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Two to five years of structural drafting, detailing, or junior structural engineering experience.
  • Strong proficiency in AutoCAD and experience preparing structural construction drawings.
  • Practical knowledge of reinforced-concrete and structural-steel detailing, including reinforcement, anchorage, base plates, and connections.
  • Experience detailing concrete foundations, such as footings, slabs, mat foundations, drilled shafts, or pile caps.
  • Ability to interpret engineering sketches, calculations, geotechnical reports, vendor drawings, and technical specifications.
  • Ability to apply established detailing practices and project requirements under engineering supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage assigned tasks and deadlines.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work with multidisciplinary project teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with substations, transmission lines, BESS, renewable-energy facilities, or industrial infrastructure.
  • Experience detailing transmission poles, substation gantries, equipment-support structures, or oil containment structures.
  • Familiarity with ACI and AISC requirements relevant to structural drawings and detailing.
  • Experience with Autodesk Revit, Navisworks, or other 3D modeling and BIM coordination tools.
  • Proficiency in Bluebeam for drawing reviews, markups, document comparisons, and quantity takeoffs.
  • Familiarity with RISA-3D, SAP2000, or similar structural analysis software.
  • Familiarity with utility or owner-specific CAD standards and drawing-development procedures.
