Job Description

Stress Engineer IV -18529

Development of engineering stress and substantiation data within budget in accordance with FAA, customer and corporate standards of quality.

What you will be responsible for:

  • Have advanced/expert knowledge of Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR’s), Airworthiness Directives (AD’s), Alternate Means of Compliance (AMOC) and related regulatory requirements and processes. Will be able to direct and mentor junior engineers with understanding regulations and directives.
  • Have advanced/expert knowledge of aircraft design concepts and industry design standards consistent with company workload environment. Will be able to direct and mentor junior engineers with design concepts and industry design standards.
  • Independently analyze structural engineering data produced by other engineering groups to ensure it meets the structural requirements for FAA certification. Will be able to direct and mentor junior engineers with analysis. Will be able to review and approve analysis.
  • Independently check structural engineering data produced by other engineering groups to ensure it meets the structural requirements for FAA certification. Will be able to direct and mentor junior engineers in the checking process.
  • Independently generate stress analysis notes in a usable, traceable file that serves as a historical substantiation record of the repair or modification. Will be able to review and approve analysis notes.
  • Independently develop, when necessary, finite element models to aid in the development of design and certification data. Will be able to direct and mentor junior engineers in modeling and analysis. Will be able to review and approve FEM analysis.
  • Independently create, develop, and implement test procedures as required to obtain certifiable allowable data. Will be able to direct and mentor junior engineers in the creation, development and implementation of test procedures. Will be able to review and approve test procedures.
  • Have an excellent relationship with the Structures DER’s and ODA UM’s to assure that structures and interior related FAR’s are addressed.
  • Independently create, develop and evaluate structural engineering substantiation reports that will be used to certify repair and modification data.
  • Will be able to direct and mentor junior engineers writing and reviewing substantiation reports.
  • Independently provide technical support to Production during the manufacturing and installation phases of developed designs. Will be able to direct and mentor junior engineers in the provision of manufacturing and installation support.
  • Demonstrate subject matter expertise on at least one area critical to substantiation.
  • Independently support other Engineering groups as workload requirements dictate.
  • Will be able to contribute to program administration.
  • Will be able to organize and execute scheduling and meetings.
  • Will be able to assume limited leadership and limited manpower delegation roles.
  • Have advanced/expert knowledge of continuous improvement of various department procedures, controls, flows and systems.
  • Must be able to work assigned schedule with minimal absences.

Qualifications

What you will need to be successful in this role:

  • BS Degree in Engineering or related scientific field, or equivalent combination of experience and coursework.
  • Ten (10) years industry experience in the engineering field, preferably dealing in the design of modifications to transport category aircraft.
  • Minimum five (5) years’ experience utilizing SolidWorks (or comparable CAD program) with demonstrable proficiency.
  • Must possess knowledge of FAA regulations, certification processes and related requirements.
  • Must possess comprehensive knowledge of standard aircraft components, materials, fabrication practices, aviation hardware and proper application in design.
  • Must possess knowledge of engineering principles used in stress analysis, 3D-computer modeling, and other analytical substantiation techniques.
  • Must possess knowledge of personal computer systems with Microsoft Office.
  • Must have knowledge of PC-based or workstation-based analysis software systems. Experience with 1 or more FEM software systems preferred.
  • Must have extensive knowledge of the use and application of aircraft technical data such as engineering drawings, SRM’s, MM’s, SB’s, IPC’s, WD’s, etc.
  • Must possess good oral, written, and organizational skills, and be able to read, write, speak and understand the English language.

Preferred:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering
  • FAA Designated Engineering Representative (DER) / or ODA Eng. UM or ability to establish DER / ODA Eng. UM candidacy

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly required to sit, stand, bend, reach and move about the facility.
  • The environmental characteristic for this position is an office setting.
  • Candidates should be able to adapt to a traditional business environment.
  • Normal office environment where approximately 70% of work is performed in a sitting position with the remaining time walking and moving around the office area.
  • Must possess ability to maneuver around airplanes (i.e. climbing stairs, on work stands, man lifts, etc.).
  • Must be able to occasionally work in an industrial environment subject to extreme temperatures and loud noises.
  • Duties require normal mental and visual attention along with manual coordination for keyboard operations.
  • Duties require typical bending, stooping, reaching, stretching, etc. with lifting typically limited to 10-20 lbs. maximum.
  • Normal or corrected hearing and vision are required.
