Summary

The Street Sign Technician plays an important role in keeping Cumberland County’s streets clearly identified, accessible, and safe for residents, visitors, and emergency responders. Working within the Planning & Inspections Department, this position manufactures, installs, inspects, repairs, and maintains street signs and related hardware while supporting the County’s E-911 addressing and emergency response system.

This is a hands-on position that combines skilled sign work, equipment operation, field inspections, and manual labor. The Street Sign Technician works throughout the County, helping ensure signs are properly positioned, secure, visible, and legible, while also assisting with special projects and other departmental needs as assigned. The position offers a four-day work schedule consisting of four 10-hour shifts from 7:00 AM to 5:30 PM.

Examples of duties

• Identifies street signs requiring repair, adjustment, cleaning, or replacement and performs necessary maintenance and repairs.
• Inspects street signs and supporting hardware to ensure proper positioning, security, visibility, and legibility.
• Installs new and replacement street signs and associated hardware using hand and power tools and other equipment.
• Ensures signs are properly positioned, securely mounted, visible to motorists, and installed according to County standards.
• Manufactures and prepares street signs and related signage using sign-making equipment.
• Ensures manufactured signage meets established specifications, design requirements, and quality standards.
• Enters sign work orders and related information into the automated system.
• Maintains basic records and inventory of sign materials and supplies.
• Performs routine preventive maintenance on assigned tools, equipment, and vehicles.
• Maintains the sign shop, work areas, and equipment in an orderly and safe condition.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED supplemented by one (1) year experience and/or training performing semi-skilled work and manual labor; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Supplemental information

• Knowledge of the County’s street system and the County’s sign policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of sign construction, installation, and repair.
• Skill in working effectively on an independent basis and demonstrating initiative in executing work.
• Ability to make sound judgments in determining the condition of signs and street markings.
• Ability to read and write, keep records, and maintain an inventory of materials.
• Ability to drive a motorized vehicle and operate equipment such as a computer and plotter, hand roller, road paint machine, and sign-making equipment.
• Ability to operate a variety of hand tools, such as a drill and air compressor.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, and the public when required.

Conditions of Employment:

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.
