Position is responsible for performing cashier duties within the Street Occupancy Permit unit of the Department of Transportation. This includes reviewing, issuing, and collecting payment for Street Occupancy permits. Work includes daily contact and interaction with the public. In this customer-facing role, reliability and punctuality are required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of standard office procedures. The ability to work with limited direct supervision and accurately perform assigned duties in a timely and professional manner. Must be able to communicate effectively with a diverse range of people including citizens, staff, and other City Department personnel, in person, by email, and by phone. Must be able to handle pressures of contact with the general public, respond to customers in a courteous and professional manner, and maintain confidential information. One to two years’ experience with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, and data systems required. The City may require that candidates take and pass a computer skills proficiency test in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and/or Excel as part of the interview process. Experience using municipal government permit databases preferred. High school education or equivalent required; Associate degree preferred. Must show a high degree of self-motivation. Experience in an office environment with comparable skills desirable. Demonstrated ability to manage time and attendance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to operate office equipment including copiers, printers, scanners, fax, base radios, paper and electronic file system. Executes multiple tasks involving keyboarding, telephones, writing, bending, reaching, and lifting up to 15 lbs. WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Standard office environment with fluorescent lighting, carpeted floors, air-conditioning. The noise level in the work environment is moderately loud, which can elevate with phone calls and walk in members of the public. Busy office work environment characterized by multiple work demands.

Cambridge is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States, in the Greater Boston area. It was named in honor of the University of Cambridge in England, a nexus of the Puritan theology embraced by the town's founders. Notably, Cambridge is home to two internationally prominent universities, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. According to a 2008 census estimate the city population was 105,594. It is the fourth most populous city in the state, behind Boston, Worcester, and Springfield. Cambridge is one of the two county seats of Middlesex County (Lowell is the other).
The site for what would become Cambridge was chosen in December 1630, because it was located safely up river from Boston Harbor, which made it easily defensible from attacks by enemy ships. The first houses were built in the spring of 1631. The settlement was initially referred to as "the newe towne". Official Massachusetts records show the name capitalized as Newe Towne by 1632. Located at the first convenient Charles River crossing west of Boston, Newe Towne was one of a number of towns (including Boston, Dorchester, Watertown, and Weymouth) founded by the 700 original Puritan colonists of the Massachusetts Bay Colony under governor John Winthrop. The original village site is in the heart of today's Harvard Square. The marketplace where farmers brought in crops from surrounding towns to sell survives today as the small park at the corner of John F. Kennedy (J.F.K.) and Winthrop Streets, then at the edge of a salt marsh, since filled.
