Grade I - $29.545 - $40.173 Hourly

Grade II - $30.316 - $41.172 Hourly

Examples of duties

Under general direction, supervises landscape maintenance, tree maintenance, irrigation systems maintenance and pest control on public streets and grounds; plans, assigns and supervises the work of employees engaged in trimming, pruning, spraying, planting and removing trees and landscape plantings; instructs employees in proper use and application of pesticides, fertilizers, tools and related landscape, weed abatement and tree maintenance equipment; establishes operating procedures and work standards; develops and maintains safe working practices and enforces safety rules and regulations including traffic control measures; evaluates and estimates job requirements, labor and material needs; ensures that employees are properly supplied with materials, tools and equipment; interviews, selects, trains, evaluates and disciplines subordinates; maintains records; prepares reports; monitors contract compliance which includes ensuring contractors fulfill contract obligations and responding to inquiries regarding contract activities; performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

A minimum of three (3) years of paid, full-time equivalent experience equivalent to the job duties in any one of the following positions: Gardener, Park Maintenance Supervisor, Power Equipment Repair Mechanic, Equipment Operator, Senior Equipment Operator, and/or Tree Trimmer, including one year in a lead or supervisory capacity. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of ornamental horticulture, arboriculture, pest control and safety practices;
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing;
  • Ability to operate a computer;
  • Working knowledge of City supported databases, work order systems, spreadsheets, and word processing applications.

Willingness to work irregular hours including evenings, weekends and holidays and respond to emergency callbacks.

A valid motor operator's license and a current DMV driving record is required by hiring department at the time of the selection.

A valid California Commercial Class B motor vehicle operator's license is required within six months of appointment.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Valid California Commercial Class B Motor Vehicle Operator's License; Certified Arborist Certification; Pest Control Advisor License.

A minimum rating of 70 must be attained in order to pass the examination. Certification by score bands will be considered based on analysis of exam results. The resulting eligible list will remain in effect for at least one year. Screening of applicants will be conducted on the basis of application and required supplemental application submitted. Only those candidates showing the strongest backgrounds on the basis of comparative analysis will be invited to the examination process. Based on the number of applications accepted, the selection procedure may be changed. In the event a revision is necessary, the affected persons will be notified.

In accordance with Civil Service Procedure 3.38, all eligible veterans that successfully qualify on any or all open-competitive examinations shall receive an additional credit of ten (10) points that will be added to their original passing score. Disabled veterans passing the examination shall receive a credit of fifteen (15) points that will be added to their original passing score. (A copy of the veterans DD-214, Member 4 form indicating honorable discharge must be attached to the application at the time of filing.)
