As a Stream Design Engineer, you will play a key role in restoring rivers, streams, and fish passage systems throughout Washington and the Pacific Northwest. You'll lead the planning and design of stream restoration and aquatic habitat projects that improve ecological function while meeting transportation, permitting, and infrastructure needs.

This position offers the opportunity to work alongside an experienced multidisciplinary team on some of the region's most impactful environmental and transportation projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the planning, analysis, and design of stream restoration, fish passage, and river engineering projects.
• Develop hydraulic and hydrologic analyses for stream crossings, culverts, bridges, and restoration projects.
• Design natural channel systems, stream grading, bank stabilization, and habitat enhancement features.
• Prepare designs utilizing large woody material, engineered log jams, bioengineering techniques, and other natural infrastructure solutions.
• Perform scour evaluations, sediment transport analyses, floodplain evaluations, backwater modeling, and channel stability assessments.
• Coordinate environmental permitting requirements with multidisciplinary project teams.
• Prepare engineering reports, construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and supporting technical documentation.
• Serve as Engineer of Record for stream restoration and hydraulic design projects when appropriate.
• Provide engineering support during construction, including responding to contractor questions, reviewing submittals, conducting site visits, and assisting with design modifications.
• Coordinate with transportation engineers, environmental scientists, geotechnical engineers, structural engineers, and public agencies throughout project delivery.
• Build and maintain strong client relationships while contributing to business development and proposal efforts.
• Mentor junior engineers and technical staff.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Biological Systems Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in Washington, or the ability to obtain Washington licensure.
• 5+ years of experience designing stream restoration, river engineering, fish passage, or hydraulic engineering projects.
• Experience with hydraulic and hydrologic modeling software such as HEC-RAS, SRH-2D, HY-8, or similar tools.
• Experience preparing construction plans and specifications for stream restoration or water resources projects.
• Working knowledge of Washington permitting processes, environmental regulations, and agency coordination.
• Strong understanding of fluvial geomorphology, channel stability, sediment transport, and aquatic habitat restoration principles.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects while working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience delivering projects for WSDOT, Washington State agencies, Tribal governments, counties, municipalities, or federal agencies.
• Experience with fish passage correction projects.
• Familiarity with Washington stream restoration and fish passage design guidance.
• Experience supporting construction of stream restoration projects.
• Experience with large woody material (LWM) design and installation.
• Proficiency with OpenRoads, Civil 3D, GIS, or related engineering software.
• Certified or willing to obtain Washington stream restoration and scour-related training as project needs require.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers and technical staff.
