The Senior, Strategic Planning leads and executes assigned strategic planning projects that help internal corporate business groups assess and implement strategic growth plans. The role partners with cross-functional stakeholders, both internal and external, and applies working knowledge of architectural floor plans and project budgets. The Senior, Strategic Planning brings cross-functional capability in space planning and strong business acumen, and demonstrates leadership that creates alignment across levels.

What You Will Do

  • Analyze store floor plans and financial data to develop feasibility order-of-magnitude plans, conceptual adjacency plans, and supporting analyses that meet project capital criteria.
  • Facilitate project-related meetings, document decisions and action items, and drive timely follow-up.
  • Translate construction scope documentation into architectural floor plans to support budgeting exercises.
  • Support the Strategic Planning Associate on assigned projects to ensure documentation accuracy.
  • Develop presentation-quality plans and analyses that follow all Macy’s guidelines for distribution to senior management.
  • Assist in developing programs and building analyses for new stores, expansions/remodels, and major remodels under the supervision of the Director, Store Strategic Planning.
  • Build alignment and foster collaboration with internal business partners (including Real Estate, Area Research, Capital Planning, Senior Management, Stores Leadership, and Operations) to gather required inputs for plans and analyses.
  • Oversee communication with external partners (including real estate developers and project architects) under the supervision of the Director, Store Strategic Planning.
  • Interpret sales performance, trade-area information, and market trends, and incorporate insights into assigned projects.
  • Manage and lead the Strategic Planning Associate in completing multiple projects simultaneously under the supervision of the Director, Store Strategic Planning.
  • Foster an environment of acceptance and respect that strengthens relationships, and ensures authentic connections with colleagues, customers, and communities.
  • In addition to the essential duties mentioned above, other duties may be assigned.

Skills You Will Need

People & Talent Leadership: Ability to lead and develop a Strategic Planning Associate, delegate work effectively, and drive on-time, high-quality delivery across multiple concurrent projects.

Strategic & Analytical Thinking: Ability to synthesize store floor plans, financial inputs, capital criteria, and market/trade-area insights into clear feasibility conclusions and actionable recommendations.

Space Planning & Plan Interpretation: Working knowledge of architectural floor plans and construction scope; ability to translate scope into plans and validate planning concepts (e.g., adjacency layouts).

Technical Proficiency (AutoCAD & Excel): Solid proficiency in AutoCAD and the MS Office Suite—especially Excel—to produce accurate plans, analyses, and budgeting support.

Cross-Functional Collaboration: Ability to partner effectively with internal stakeholders (Real Estate, Area Research, Capital Planning, Stores Leadership, Operations, and Senior Management) to gather inputs, align priorities, and deliver integrated plans.

External Partner Management: Ability to coordinate with external partners (real estate developers and project architects) to obtain information, resolve questions, and maintain momentum under director oversight.

Communication & Executive-Ready Storytelling: Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to facilitate meetings (on-site, webinar, phone) and deliver presentation-quality materials aligned with Macy’s guidelines for senior audiences.

Project Management & Execution: Highly organized self-starter with strong prioritization and follow-through; ability to run meetings, document decisions/action items, manage timelines, and deliver results with minimal supervision.

Problem Solving & Solution Orientation: Ability to anticipate issues, evaluate alternatives, and propose practical, solution-driven options that balance design intent, budget, and business goals.

Attention to Detail & Quality Control: Meticulous attention to detail to ensure accuracy in data analyses and consistency between documentation and architectural floor plans.

Who You Are

  • Candidates with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply. 6 or more years of architectural or planning experience, minimum 3 years in a retail environment.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
