Job Description

We are seeking an experienced and strategic finance professional to join our Finance team as a Strategic Financial Planner. Reporting to the Financial Controller, this critical role will lead the development of Council's Annual Plan and Long-Term Plan (LTP) while providing expert financial advice that supports effective decision-making and long-term financial sustainability.
This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified Chartered Accountant or equivalent professional who thrives in a complex environment and enjoys influencing strategic outcomes. You will play a key role in ensuring Council maintains a strong financial position through high-quality budgeting, planning, policy development, treasury management, and financial reporting practices.
Working closely with senior leaders, elected members, mana whenua, and a wide range of stakeholders, you will facilitate the development of long-term financial strategies and assumptions, provide expert analysis across major planning processes, and lead the review and development of key financial policies. You will also manage treasury activities, oversee grant accountability reporting, monitor emerging legislation, and support the implementation of financial planning and budgeting models within Council's ERP environment.
To be successful in this role, you will be CA qualified (or hold an equivalent qualification) and have experience in treasury management, strategic financial planning, budgeting, and reporting. You will bring strong financial risk management capability, outstanding analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to translate complex financial information into meaningful insights. Experience working within a regulated environment, particularly local government, will be highly regarded.
We are looking for someone who can build effective relationships across all levels of an organisation, facilitate collaborative discussions, lead projects to successful outcomes, and balance strategic thinking with practical delivery. You will be proactive, accountable, adaptable, and committed to continuous improvement.
If you are passionate about shaping the financial future of one of New Zealand's most unique and dynamic districts, we would love to hear from you.
