Job Description

Cardiovascular, renal, and metabolic (CVRM) diseases, including obesity and type 2 diabetes, are a major public health emergency, impacting over half of the global population, causing 19 million deaths annually, and imposing a tremendous burden on healthcare systems and society. Roche is uniquely positioned to address these challenges with its comprehensive pipeline of potential best- and first-in-class investigational medicines.

The Roche Clinical Development organization is structured by therapeutic area and is responsible for developing and executing the late-stage development (Phase 2-3) clinical strategies and plans to deliver medically differentiated therapies that provide meaningful improvement to patients.

We are seeking an accomplished and seasoned leader to drive our portfolio growth. This role requires a unique combination of scientific, business and therapeutic expertise with a proven track record of advancing R&D programs. The CVRM Therapeutic Area (TA) Strategic Business Lead is a newly established position reporting directly to the PDC CVRM TA Head. As a member of the TA Core Leadership Team (LT), you will drive, own, and be accountable for the strategic and operational alignment across key leadership groups within the Roche/Genentech R&D and commercialization ecosystem (for internal audience: including PDC, GPS, PDMA, gRED, and pRED) to support all relevant portfolio business needs. You will focus on building, maintaining, and continuously improving the TA by driving business acumen, operational excellence and fostering community across global sites.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning, Strategy Realization & Goal Alignment:

  • Collaborate with the TA Head and LT to define and set strategic priorities, strategic review cycles, and operational plans; translate Roche/Genentech (PD, PPT) organizational goals into CVRM PDC goals

  • Direct and Lead the organizational strategy roll out, create robust realization plans and tactics including quantifiable KPIs; own the TA performance dashboard to ensure course correction when goals are at risk

  • Lead large scale cross-functional projects to ensure the timely and successful delivery of initiatives; develop and manage project plans, track progress, and identify risks and mitigation strategies at the CVRM portfolio level (ie be the “keeper” of the various individual project IEPs and to integrate those IEPs on the portfolio level)

  • Establish and Govern CVRM PDC’s engagement model as the primary executive liaison to the broader Roche organization and critical external parties with a focus on community management, team connectivity and cohesion

Financial & Resource Management:

  • Serve as the CVRM TA’s Financial Steward with accountability for TA budget allocation; making high-stakes trade-off decisions, identifying cost-saving opportunities and reallocating resources dynamically to high-priority programs to maximize long-term portfolio ROI.

  • Lead development of measures to manage resources and budgets in collaboration with Finance, People & Culture and Strategic Intelligence & Business Optimization; Partner with people leaders including CVRM LT members to ensure that resource allocation is directly tied to high-impact deliverables and top strategic priorities and ensuring the right talent is on the most critical projects

  • Monitor resource and budget realization to ensure strict financial responsibility and alignment with TA priorities.

  • Manage travel guidance and tracking via a centralized travel tracker; manage conference and industry meetings attendance

Operational Excellence & Communications:

  • Bring strong business acumen and leadership to day-to-day CVRM operations; streamline processes and procedures to optimize efficiency and impact; audit existing operational workflows to eliminate redundancies; implement industry-standard benchmarks to measure and improve the "velocity" of TA decision-making.

  • Maintain TA and Disease Area Strategy slide decks and support inputs for the Board Implementation Team for Development and Business Boards

  • Plan, manage agendas and minutes for CVRM TA Core LT meetings, off-sites, and TA Community Meetings; facilitate meetings when required

  • Organize and orchestrate cross-functional activities, including Town Halls and community-building events with GPS and REDs

  • Lead TA Communications in partnership with Communications Leaders to ensure alignment with departmental priorities.

  • Collaborate with P&C and Finance to support resourcing discussions, performance calibrations, and promotion cycles

Partnering:

  • Serve as a coach and catalyst to the TA LT and TA community

  • Act as a thought partner, drive engagement and change management in collaboration with CVRM leaders and the People & Culture function; lead efforts to foster team effectiveness and organizational development

  • Be acutely aware of organizational health and culture, share back any critical organizational health issues with the LT and identify action plans to mediate/ mitigate

  • Identifying emerging business opportunities or external trends

Who You Are:
(Required)

  • You have a Master’s degree (MBA, Finance, or M.S. in a scientific field) with a strong foundation in quantitative analysis

  • You have 4 or more years experience in a business strategy or leadership role, managing complex high-impact projects/programs from design to execution in a global environment and influencing high-performing teams; you have a deep understanding of business strategy, operations and organizational performance

  • You have 10+ years of professional experience, preferably in pharmaceutical, biotech, or other highly-regulated industry

  • You have demonstrated knowledge of the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors, gained through direct industry experience or pharmaceutical management consulting.

  • You have the ability to understand the landscape and interconnectedness of activities within the wider business and demonstrated ability for strategic tradeoff analysis

  • You have a demonstrated strategic mindset:

    • Proven ability to translate high-level functional strategy into operational goals and implementation plans.

    • Exceptional ability to use data-driven insights to influence the Core Leadership Team and drive consensus on difficult business trade-offs.

    • A track record of accomplishing goals through influence and collaboration across multi-country, cross-functional teams.

  • You are a self-starter:

    • Ability to prioritize outcomes over activities

    • proven ability to hold senior leaders accountable for deliverables.

    • You will be expected to identify and fix things before they become issues.

    • Your decision making is data driven.

  • You have strong Financial Acumen:

    • You have advanced proficiency in financial modeling, resource forecasting, and budget management within a complex, matrixed R&D environment.

    • You have demonstrated experience developing metrics for resource management and maintaining financial responsibility for departmental budgets.

    • You have the ability to use of financial data to recommend portfolio prioritization, delivery of quarterly business reports, and development and maintenance of KPI dashboards

Preferred:

  • You have track record of establishing successful internal partnerships with relevant partner organizations and the ability to act as an ambassador for Roche

  • You have strong influencing skills and are a confident communicator

  • You have prior people management experience

  • You have the ability to travel internationally and work with multi-cultural teams

  • You have strong interpersonal skills: Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, and written communication and influencing skills: has built and cultivated important relationships both inside an organization and externally. Has proven abilities to influence internal partners and stakeholders, thought leaders, national advocacy organizations, national standard-setting bodies, and other relevant external parties. Seamlessly collaborates with colleagues/other parts of the organization.

This position will be based on-site in Boston, MA.
Relocation support will not be provided for this position.

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of Boston, MA is $150,000 - $285,000. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. A discretionary annual bonus may be available based on individual and Company performance.
