The City of Fayetteville is currently recruiting for a Stormwater Inspector to perform a wide variety of technical inspection and engineering duties inspecting stormwater projects, ensuring permit compliance, monitoring water quality, preparing and reviewing plans and specifications, documenting stormwater quality program components, providing information to staff and the general public; and perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility.

Examples of duties

  1. Answer questions and provide information to City staff, business owners, private contractors, developers, and the general public; respond to and resolve sensitive citizen inquiries and complaints.
  2. Assist various agencies in the tracking of spills and/or illegal discharges and dumping.
  3. Perform inspections utilizing Best Management Practices (BMPs).
  4. Ensure compliance and enforcement of the City’s National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit and stormwater ordinance; ensure compliance with stormwater quality management plans and federal, state and local codes, regulations and ordinances.
  5. Perform water quality monitory and investigative duties to maintain a comprehensive stormwater management program; identify and eliminate illicit connections to the stormwater drainage system.
  6. Perform industrial facilities restaurant and outfall inspections and evaluate sites against the stormwater quality management plan.
  7. Assist with the coordination of assigned engineering projects, prepare engineering reports, review plans and specifications related to SCMs and drainage, coordinate with other departments and agencies; and perform a variety of complex mathematic calculations.
  8. Monitor, inspect and investigate stormwater activities and complaints; maintain and care for field sampling equipment and related property; exercise document and file management skills to prepare, maintain and update a variety of files and records including daily logs, inventories, and work orders.
  9. Evaluate, analyze and manage monitored data; compile, prepare and distribute a variety of technical reports, correspondence and documents.
  10. Perform construction inspections and post construction inspections of stormwater control measures (SCM).

Qualifications

Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Experience:
One year experience in watershed management, water quality monitoring or a related field.

Training:
Equivalent to an Associate's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil engineering technology, environmental sciences, watershed management or a related field.

LICENSING & CERTIFICATIONS:

Required
Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license and ability to maintain insurability.

Preferred
Commissioned by the State of North Carolina as a Notary Public; Emergency Response Training certification; Construction Inspection Level I; Hazardous Materials Operations Level I certification; Stormwater BMP Construction certification; Stormwater SCM Inspection and Maintenance Certification; DOT Erosion/Sediment Level I certification; Confined Space Entry certification; HAZWOPER certification; NC Wildlife Resource Commission Boaters Education card.

  • SBI/Fingerprinting Criminal History Record Check Requirement To comply with Sessions Law 2025-16, applicants offered a position with the City may be subject to a criminal history record check of State and National Repositories of Criminal Histories conducted by the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) in accordance with G.S. 143B-1209.26 The City may consider the results of these criminal history record checks in its hiring decisions.


From the time of closing, the selection process is anticipated to last approximately 4 - 6 weeks. The process will consist of a panel interview with the selected candidate being subject to a pre-employment drug screen, background check, and driving history check.
