Koniag IT Systems (KITS) is seeking a Storage / Backup Engineer with a minimum of 5 years of experience to design, implement, and support enterprise storage and data protection solutions for a federal civilian customer. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with SAN/NAS storage platforms, enterprise backup software, and cloud-based backup and disaster recovery targets, and will play a key role in the customer's business disaster continuity and recovery (BDCR) initiative.
The Storage / Backup Engineer will be responsible for administering enterprise SAN and NAS storage platforms, designing and maintaining enterprise backup architecture, and supporting the customer's business disaster continuity and recovery (BDCR) program.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Administer enterprise SAN and NAS storage platforms, including provisioning, capacity planning, performance tuning, and lifecycle management.
• Design and maintain enterprise backup architecture using tools such as Veeam, Commvault, or NetBackup across on-premises and AWS cloud targets.
• Support implementation of the customer's business disaster continuity and recovery (BDCR) solution, including replication, failover, and recovery testing for mission-critical financial systems.
• Monitor backup job success rates, troubleshoot failures, and maintain recovery time and recovery point objectives (RTO/RPO) documented in the customer's continuity of operations (COOP) plan.
• Coordinate data migration from legacy on-premises storage to cloud-based storage (e.g., Amazon S3, EBS, FSx) as part of ongoing data center exit efforts.
• Implement and maintain storage security controls, including encryption at rest, access controls, and audit logging in accordance with NIST SP 800-53.
• Partner with database and server engineering teams to align storage and backup design with application recovery requirements.
• Maintain accurate documentation of storage architecture, backup schedules, and disaster recovery runbooks.
• Participate in scheduled DR/failover exercises and after-action reporting.
Education and Experience:
Required:
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent professional experience
• Minimum of 5 years of experience administering enterprise storage (SAN/NAS) and backup systems
• Hands-on experience with enterprise backup platforms (Veeam, Commvault, NetBackup, or similar)
• Experience with cloud storage and backup targets (AWS S3/EBS/FSx or equivalent)
Required Skills and Competencies:
• Working knowledge of data protection concepts including RTO/RPO, replication, and disaster recovery testing
• Familiarity with storage security best practices, including encryption and access controls
• Understanding of immutable/air-gapped backups and resilience standards
• Strong troubleshooting and documentation skills
• Ability to obtain Public Trust clearance
Desired Skills and Competencies:
• Experience working in a federal government IT environment
• Knowledge of compliance frameworks such as FedRAMP, FISMA, or NIST
• Vendor certification in a major storage or backup platform (e.g., NetApp NCDA, Dell EMC, Veeam VMCE, Commvault CVE)
• Experience supporting a formal BDCR or COOP program for a federal financial or mission-critical system
• Experience with storage migration as part of a data center consolidation effort
• AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate or AWS storage-focused specialty knowledge
