Job Description

Responsible for maintaining and providing sterile instruments and supplies for surgery. Requires memorization skills and attention to detail. Must hold current sterile processing tech certification or obtain certification within 6 months of hire.

Reports to: Director of Perioperative Services or RN Supervisor

Hourly Rate: $20.65-30.66 (hourly rate does not include overtime or bonuses which are not guaranteed)

Essential Job Functions:

  • Responsible for sterile processing of instruments, equipment and supplies
  • Collects, cleans, Inspects and reassembles instrument sets
  • Knowledgeable and maintains competency in the cleaning and processing of sterile equipment, supplies and instruments
  • Reviews operating room schedules, anticipating needs and/or conflicts with instrumentation or equipment
  • Prepares items for sterilization based on knowledge of sterilization methods required for specific instruments/equipment.
  • Properly identifies and delivers the correct items, in a timely fashion to appropriate areas including OR’s, procedure rooms or physician office locations if needed and requested.
  • Prepares packs of supplies, instruments, dressing and treatment trays, according to designated lists or codes, and wraps, labels, and seals packs according to standards.
  • Other job duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

Education: High School Diploma, G.E.D., or applicable clinical experience such as medical assistant, nurse aides, etc.

Certification, Licensure preferred: CSPDT or CRCST

Experience, Training, Knowledge: Two (2) to three (3) years experience in a healthcare setting preferred

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to see in order to read, write, and perform clerical/secretarial job duties. Must be able to hear and speak in order to communicate with others in person and by telephone. Must have manual dexterity to use a computer keyboard and other usual office equipment. Light to moderate physical effort may be required to lift, push and pull carts.

Working Conditions/Environmental Exposures:

Environmental hazards such as chemicals, solvents, needles, needle containers, sharps, blood, body fluids, various infectious/communicable diseases, infectious medical waste, radiation, and/or radioactive materials and/or radioactive waste, proximity to moving mechanical parts. Protective clothing/equipment may be necessary.

ASH IMMUNIZATIONS AND VACCINATIONS REQUIREMENTS – Aligns with CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for Healthcare Personnel

  • Hepatitis B- Lab evidence of immunity (titer) to Hepatitis B or three doses Hep B vaccine at appropriate intervals
  • Influenza- documentation of current seasonal flu vaccine (mandatory from November 1st through March 31st each year)
  • Measles, Mumps, and Rubella - Lab evidence of immunity (titer) to Measles, Mumps, and Rubella or 2 doses of MMR Vaccination
  • Varicella (chickenpox) - Lab evidence of immunity (titer) to Varicella or 2 doses of Varicella Vaccine
  • Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (Tdap) - documented proof of immunization
  • Tuberculosis Screening - Documentation of a two-step TB skin test within the past year OR lab verification of a negative TB Gold or T-Spot tuberculin test within the past 6 months
