Job Description

Primary Scheduled Hours: 64 hours per pay period, (4) 8 hours shifts per week

The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization, storage and distribution of surgical instruments and medical equipment throughout the district, utilizing infection control and safety practices during all phases of the process.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Operates all required equipment and machinery accurately and safely, prepares, assembles, and sterilizes instruments and supplies according to parameters of sterilization in accordance with The Department of Health, TJC, OSHA, CDC, AAMI and AORN standards.
  • Maintains appropriate records, and monitors quality control and infection control standards.
  • Provides asset management and support of surgical instruments and trays belonging to or consigned to the facility.
  • Decontaminate, clean, inspect, assemble and sterilize surgical instruments and medical equipment according to hospital policy, manufacturer guidelines and regulatory standards.
  • Operate and monitor sterilization equipment (steam, low temperature and other methods as applicable)
  • Accurately documents sterilization cycles, biological tests, and load records
  • Identify damaged or malfunctioning instruments and communicate repair or replacement needs
  • Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all FSC policies, procedures and standards and quality of service.
  • Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency;
  • Supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; Communicate with operating room staff to provide required instruments.
  • Clean, set up, sterilize and distribute instruments as scheduled on each shift.
  • Is familiar with organization, department and job specific Environment of Care areas, including Life Safety, Hazardous Materials Communications, Emergency Preparedness, Infection Control and Medical Equipment Failure.
  • Adheres to Standard Precautions, personal protective equipment and safe patient handling; Handles and disposes of infectious waste appropriately.

Education Background and Experience Requirements

Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or equivalent

Required Qualifications:

Completion of Sterile Processing Technician training program OR completion of on the job training program / experience

Required Experience:

1 year sterile processing experience in a hospital setting

Preferred Qualifications:

Certification as a Sterile Processing Technician (CRCST, CSPDT or CBSPD) preferred; Previous experience in a hospital or critical access hospital setting; Experience working independently or in small teams.

Successful candidates typically begin between the beginning and midpoint of the compensation range dependent on qualifications/experience and receive compensation in increments increases annually.

NHHS employs six primary care physicians, four emergency room physicians, one hospitalist, six health care affiliates, three pharmacists, two Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, and five surgeons (general, orthopedic, gynecology, podiatry). We offer complete obstetrical care including epidural anesthesia and Cesarean deliveries in a private, family setting.

Outpatient services are comprised of full-service diagnostic imaging (radiology), laboratory, pathology and licensed physical, occupational, and speech therapy. NHHS also offers short stay and same day surgical services and a fully staffed general medical acute care unit.
