Position responsible for the preparation and packaging of surgical instruments for sterilization utilizing principles of Standard Precautions and utilizing Principles of Event Related Sterility. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patient served. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development as it relates to the different life cycles.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Education: High School diploma or equivalent.
2. Experience: 6 months of experience involving sterilization of instruments, equipment and supplies.
3. Certification: Certified by the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) or International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Management (IAHCSMM)
4. Ability to follow oral and written instructions and perform basic mathematical calculations.
5. Ability to lift and/or maneuver supplies and equipment in conjunction with others in order to perform job functions.
6. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
1. Operates all required equipment and machinery accurately and safely, prepares, assembles, and sterilizes instruments and supplies according to parameters of sterilization. Maintains appropriate records, and monitors quality control and infection control standards.
2. Accurately handles and cares for instruments appropriately, including appropriate selection of cleaning agents, lubricants, examination for function, identification and assembly according to count sheet and preparation for sterilization; retrieves malfunctioning instruments and ensures repairs are completed.
3. Correctly peel-packs supplies/ instruments, wraps instruments for sterilization, inspects each instrument for use, function, completeness, and cleanliness.
4. Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.
5. Promotes individual professional growth and development by meeting requirements for mandatory/continuing education and skills competency; supports department-based goals which contribute to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.
6. Other duties as assigned.
