Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist, responsibilities of this position includes the preparation, dispensing and delivery of medications for patients. Completes other tasks associated with drug distribution processes, automated dispensing systems, packaging, IV systems, training, and scheduling.

Major Responsibilities:

General Tasks:

  • Answers telephone calls and triages requests from customers to the pharmacist staff.
  • Triages window requests from customers.
  • Delivers medications to the patient care areas and picks up copies of physician orders, return of medications, etc. Complete scheduled rounds on patient care areas.
  • Assists the pharmacist staff with day to day requests from patient care providers.

Inventory management tasks:

  • Assists with ordering, receiving and storing non-controlled medications from the wholesaler on a daily basis.
  • Stores medications in designated areas in the central pharmacy, IV room and anesthesia prep area.
  • Assures bin labels are visible and clear.
  • Segregate medications to appropriate storage bins, etc.
  • Checks for expiration dating on medications on a consistent basis to assure medications do not leave pharmacy with short dating.

Preparation and dispensing of medications for patients – Drug Distribution Systems:

  • Accurately packages unit dose medications with appropriate labeling information as outlined in policy and procedures to support Pharmacy distribution process including:
  • a) Pre-packing bulk medications.
  • b) Compounding ointments, creams, oral solutions, and other medications as needed
  • Under the supervision of a pharmacist, completes all assigned drug distribution tasks assigned.
  • Under the supervision of a pharmacist, completes all necessary tasks associated with day to day operations of Pyxis distribution system including:
  • a) Refilling medications
  • b) Loading new medications
  • c) Inventory maintenance
  • d) Expiration dating
  • e) Returning bin procedures
  • f) Troubleshooting for nursing and pharmacy
  • g) Customer service resolution for nursing and pharmacy
  • h) Controlled substance discrepancy resolution assistance for the pharmacist staff as needed.
  • Assists the management team with inventory optimization of Pyxis on an ongoing basis.
  • Identifies quality improvements and customer service improvements with Pyxis automation.
  • Completes other distribution tasks as assigned by pharmacist.
  • Trains colleagues and technical staff as needed.

Preparation and dispensing of medications for patients – IV Room Distribution Systems:

  • Under the supervision of a pharmacist, accurately complete all daily assignments for IV room distribution following USP 797 practice standards and pharmacy policy and procedures.
  • Under the supervision of a pharmacist, completes all necessary tasks associated with day to day operations of IV Room distribution systems including:
  • a) Patient specific IV preparation – daily batch preparation
  • b) Batch IV production for pharmacy prepared products
  • c) Small volume parenterals
  • d) Large volume parenterals
  • e) IV syringes
  • f) IV infusions
  • g) TPNs
  • Other patient specific IV preparation as needed
  • Quality control tasks e.g. hood cleaning documentation, temperature logs, daily cleaning of IV room, etc. to comply with USP 797 practice standards.
  • Comply with all internal pharmacy documentation requirements as outlined in policy and procedures.
  • TPN production following internal policy and procedures with automated pumps and comply with all internal documentation requirements for preparing and dispensing.
  • Chemotherapy production following internal policy and procedures.
  • Other IV distribution tasks as assigned by pharmacist.
  • Trains colleagues and technical staff as needed.

Nursing unit inspections:

  • Complete monthly nursing unit inspections as needed following pharmacy policy and procedures.
  • Identify safety, quality and workflow improvements as noted during the monthly nursing unit inspections.

Customer service responsibilities:

  • Acts as a liaison for pharmacy while delivering medications to the patient care areas.
  • Ability to effectively interact and problem solve with other team members of the pharmacy department.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Good interpersonal skills, especially related to health care colleagues.
  • Ability to read, write and speak clearly in English.

P osition Qualifications:


License/Certification/Education:

Required:

  • High School diploma
  • Registered as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Massachusetts

Preferred:

  • National certification.

Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • Baseline understanding of automated dispensing systems, technology and IV room processes.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to comply with all department and hospital policy and procedures.
  • Ability to effectively interact and problem solve with other team members of the pharmacy department.
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Good interpersonal skills, especially related to health care colleagues.
  • Ability to read, write and speak clearly in English.

Preferred:

  • Minimum of one to two years of experience in hospital pharmacy

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
