Key responsibilities and highlights:
Tutor peers in STEM subject material they are qualified to cover
May seek or perform other necessary STEM Center work, with approval
Some initial and ongoing (paid) training is likely to be required
Position structure:
Will have one regular paid guaranteed shift per week (likely 3 hours, and in the late afternoon and early evening such as 4-7PM on a Sunday-Thursday); work during this shift will be tutoring, preparation/training, other tasks to support the STEM Center and our stakeholders, or other work to benefit the University
Needs to establish additional availability within library hours of operation for “on-call” tutoring (paid for actual tutoring appointments only; up to ~3 additional hours if holding appointments, more may be possible but cannot be guaranteed)
There will basically be one such tutor per major (one per set of similar majors) for each area traditionally served by the STEM Center
Career Readiness Learning Objectives:
Critical Thinking/Problem Solving: A STEM tutor can develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills by breaking down complex concepts for students, identifying gaps in their understanding, and helping them develop strategies to solve problems.
Oral/Written Communication: STEM tutors need to clearly explain complex ideas and concepts to students within tutoring sessions and in interactions with coworkers and STEM Center management. Tutors may be required to speak to classes, reach out to students, and represent the STEM Center at functions or events. Additionally, tutors may be required to send emails, make phone calls, or initiate other communication on behalf of the STEM Center.
Teamwork/Collaboration: STEM tutors can facilitate or assist with group study sessions and participate in other projects or initiatives to support the STEM Center.
Digital Technology: Tutors may create online resources, utilizing software or apps to visualize concepts, and must make extensive use of scheduling systems, MS Teams, and other software to perform essential functions of the job.
Leadership: In working with a variety of students, tutors have regular opportunity to thrive in changing environments, to identify and address complex problems, and to navigate ambiguity.
Professionalism/Work Ethic: By being punctual, prepared, and professional in their interactions with students, tutors can showcase a strong work ethic. They must also adhere to ethical guidelines and respect the confidentiality of their students.
Career Management: The STEM Center is a cocurricular opportunity to develop and showcase the ability to build success in others and specifically to teach or train others. Tutoring course material often builds additional competencies in those areas.
Global/Intercultural Fluency: To develop global and intercultural fluency, tutors often have opportunities to work with a diverse slate of Gannon students, learning, understanding, and adapting to academic and nonacademic facets of culture and communication.
