Steel Fabrication Fitter – Richmond, VA

Location: Richmond, VA

Job Type: Full-Time, Contract-to-Hire

Shifts: 1st & 2nd Shift

Pay: Up to $28/hour, based on experience

2nd Shift Differential: +$3/hour

Position Overview

Seeking an experienced steel fabrication fitter to prepare and assemble structural steel components. This hands-on role requires blueprint reading, accurate layout and measurements, component positioning, and proper fit-up before final fabrication.

Key Responsibilities

• Read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and fabrication specifications.
• Lay out, measure, mark, position, and fit structural steel components.
• Prepare steel parts for fabrication and assembly.
• Align and secure components according to drawing dimensions and specifications.
• Set up and operate fabrication equipment, including a track torch.
• Monitor measurements and component placement throughout the fabrication process.
• Inspect assemblies for proper dimensions, alignment, fit-up, and overall workmanship.
• Identify and correct fitting or alignment issues when necessary.
• Coordinate with supervisors and other shop personnel to meet production requirements.
• Keep tools, materials, and work areas clean and organized.
• Follow established safety procedures and shop requirements.

Qualifications

• Previous experience in structural steel fitting, layout, or fabrication.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints and technical drawings.
• Hands-on experience with steel fitting, alignment, positioning, and assembly.
• Ability to set up and operate a track torch.
• Familiarity with welding methods, fabrication machinery, and common shop tools.
• Strong measuring skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to produce accurate, quality work in a production environment.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a fabrication team.
• Commitment to safe work practices and an organized shop environment.
• AWS or other welding certifications are a plus.
