
Steam Fireman - CoGen-(260002LF)
Tewksbury Hospital, part of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking a licensed Steam Fireman CoGen to play an essential role in maintaining the continuous operation of high- and low-pressure boiler systems, satellite boilers, and cogeneration equipment that support a dynamic campus environment. Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary and not all inclusive):
·Operate and maintain high- and low-pressure boilers, satellite boilers, and cogeneration equipment in accordance with standard operating procedures and safety regulations.
·Monitor and regulate system performance by reading meters and gauges and adjusting controls to maintain proper temperature, pressure, fuel, and water levels.
·Control fuel flow, airflow, and steam pressure by opening and closing valves and making necessary system adjustments to ensure safe and efficient operations.
·Conduct routine inspections of boiler systems, auxiliary equipment, and campus-wide steam heating and distribution systems to ensure optimal performance.
·Identify and troubleshoot equipment malfunctions, determine necessary repairs, and coordinate with appropriate personnel or initiate system shutdowns as needed.
·Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on boilers and related equipment, including pumps, burners, filters, and piping systems.
·Maintain accurate operational records and logs, including temperature readings, fuel consumption, and system performance data.
·Support plant operations by maintaining clean work areas, assisting with fuel receipt and storage, responding to heating-related service calls, and participating in required training programs.
Required Qualifications:
·Must possess a current and valid First or Second Class Steam Fireman’s license issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety, pursuant to Chapter 146 of the Massachusetts General Laws.
·Strong knowledge of low- and high-pressure boilers, including natural gas- and oil-fired systems, and their auxiliary equipment.
·Understanding of power plant operations, including electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic control systems and their calibration and adjustment.
·Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments such as manometers, voltmeters, anemometers, and tachometers.
·Working knowledge of safety procedures and proper fuel handling and storage practices in a power plant environment.
·Skilled in pipefitting techniques, including pipe threading and soldering, and the use of hand and power tools.
·Ability to read and interpret technical documents, including plans, specifications, schematics, and operational manuals.
·Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve heating and equipment-related issues and maintain accurate operational records.
·Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, physical stamina, and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions while adapting to changing operational needs.
Preferred Qualifications:
·Prior experience working in a central plant, hospital, campus, or industrial power plant environment.

Salary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range.
