Position Overview

The Division of Developmental Disabilities is seeking to hire a Stationary Fireman for the Murray Developmental Center located in Centralia, Illinois to receive day-to-day guidance and assignments from the Chief Stationary Engineer. Washes boilers, scrapes and cleans drums, fires boilers, operates boiler feed and vacuums pumps, operates coal conveyors, removes ashes from boiler pits. Performs shuts down, cleans and assists with the repair and maintenance of heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment in the boiler room. Travels in performance of duties.

Essential Functions

• Receives day-to-day guidance and assignments from the Chief Stationary Engineer at the Murray Developmental Health Center.
• Washes boilers, scrapes and cleans drums and tubes.
• Operates boiler feed and vacuum pumps, water softeners and coal conveyors utilizing appropriate equipment and tools to verify proper fuel supply.
• Performs shut downs.
• Documents and maintains records of fuel and other supplies consumed.
• Assists the Stationary Engineer.
• Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Minimum Qualifications

• Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of high school.
• Requires two years experience in the operation of high pressure stationary boilers.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two (2) years of specialized experience in the operation of high-pressure coal, gas or oil-fired boilers and their apparatuses.
• Two (2) years of specialized experience in water treatment and various chemicals used in boiler systems.
• Two (2) years of specialized experience diagnosing problems in mechanical, electrical, heating and air conditioning/HVAC systems.
• Two (2) years of experience taking utility readings, logging records, ensuring maintenance schedules are followed, reviewing and actioning maintenance reports for technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.
• Two (2) years of experience diagnosing building and mechanical issues, recognizing potentially dangerous situations, and implementing appropriate emergency responses.
• Two (2) years of specialized experience in public health Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and building codes of technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.
• Two (2) years of experience following and expressing complex ideas clearly both orally and in written form in the field of technical stationary engineering power plant building systems.

• Requires the ability to lift and carry heavy loads up to 75 pounds independently and up to 100 pounds with assistance.
• Requires ability to crawl into small spaces.
• Requires the ability to operate heavy equipment.
• Requires the ability to work after business hours, weekends and holidays.
• Requires the ability to utilize office equipment, including personal computers.
• Requires ability to pass the IDHS background check.
• Requires ability to pass a drug screen for drugs prohibited from recreational use under Illinois Law.
