Enforces state and federal laws governing commercial motor vehicles. Protects the motoring public by preventing accidents, removing unsafe drivers, and vehicles from South Carolina (SC) highways. Protects South Carolina's environment from unsafe hazardous materials transportation practices. Prevents the premature deterioration of our bridges through size and weight enforcement.

Serves under the direction of the STP Lower Region Field Enforcement Captain as the Headquarters Executive Administrative Officer for Regions 1, 5, and 6. Reviews schedules and work assignments ensuring supervisory coverage on all shifts. Ensures that SC high crash corridors and complaint areas are worked and maintains the mandated Inspection/Weigh Station hours that are mandated through the STP size and Weight Plan. Monitors and approves subordinates work hours and leave. Ensures that supply and training needs are met.

Oversees all oversize/overweight escort and other programs assigned for STP. Coordinates special activities. Monitors statewide progress toward achieving annual program goals. Reviews the overall efficiency and effectiveness of these programs. Compiles and submits reports of program activities.

Responsible for reviewing all required activity, documents, and reports created by STP personnel under his/her supervision. Ensures South Carolina Enterprise Information System (SCEIS) entries are completed in a timely manner and approved. Oversees the evidence process, conducts periodic ticket and video audits, and maintains all proper documentation needed for The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). Ensures all personnel equipment is suitable and well maintained for duty.

Collaborates with other STP Command Staff members in the areas of program direction, interpretation of regulations, strategic planning, and organizational analysis. Must be present at STP Headquarters in the absence of the Duty Officer to assume the Duty Officer's roles and responsibilities.

Attends continuous in-service training for recertification and maintaining all State and Federal Certifications. Ensures subordinates also maintain these certifications as required.

State Minimum Requirements -
A bachelor's degree and experience supervising law enforcement personnel at a public law enforcement agency.

Agency Minimum Requirements -
  • A bachelor's degree and experience supervising law enforcement personnel at a public law enforcement agency or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must have attained permanent status in the rank of STP Sergeant for six (6) months.
  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years of Class 1 Law Enforcement Experience.
  • Employee must be certified by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
  • Employee must have the ability to lead and firmly but courteously deal with the public and subordinates.
  • Must be able to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
  • Employee must have thorough knowledge of state and federal motor carrier and traffic laws.
  • Employee must have proficient administrative ability and knowledge of STP methods and procedures.
  • Must have the ability to plan, organize, assign, direct, and evaluate overall operations of assigned unit.
  • Employee must ensure actions support Department Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action and workforce diversity policies and objectives.
Additional Requirements -
Employee manages and supervises large groups of personnel in field enforcement. Employee has broad latitude for independent action in management and supervision of subordinates. Employee must maintain regular contact with superiors and STP Head Quarters administrative staff.
