The State Government Affairs Manager works closely with the Director Government Affairs, Vice President of External Affairs, Regulatory Department and State President by representing the Corporation and its issues before the state legislature, state government, industry, trade and public advocacy groups. The manager must help develop, organize and implement corporate policy and strategy at the state level and be able to educate the state legislature, government and federal delegation as to the goals, objectives and needs of the American Electric Power Corporation and its Operating Companies.

What You'll Do:

  • Help develop, organize and implement Corporate policy and strategy for overall effective state representation by educating the state legislators, their staff and the state government as to the goals, objectives and needs of the Corporation.
  • Develop and maintain a broad base of legislative, government and industry contacts at every level.
  • Gather and help interpret all legislative and government information that might impact corporate business.
  • Confers with legislators and officials to emphasize supposed weaknesses or merits of specific bills to influence passage, defeat, or amendment of the measure, or introduction of legislation more favorable to the corporation.
  • Be responsive to the state legislature and the federal government, and maintain relationships with associations, organizations and public advocacy groups.
  • Help market and sell Corporate issues and legislative initiatives to the state legislature, government and other affected parties.
  • Support corporate grassroots initiatives and Political Action Committee (PAC) activities.

What We're Looking For:

Education requirements are listed below:

  • Bachelor's degree in public policy, public relations, communications or other related disciplines.

Work Experience requirement listed below:

  • Minimum 6 years' experience in community/public affairs, communications or direct related experience in the industry. Or a minimum 6 years' experience with the state legislature, state government or comparable state work.

Required License(s)/Certification(s) are listed below:

  • Must have a valid Driver's license with an acceptable driving record.

Other Must Haves:

  • Physical demand level is Sedentary
  • Demonstrated communications skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Must be able to travel to various locations for extended periods and work late into the evenings.
  • Must demonstrate the highest standards of ethical behavior and support the Company's Corporate Compliance Policies.
  • Must have demonstrated building strategic relationships with appropriate contacts to support AEP's policies.
  • Must be able to see information on computer screen and use computer keyboard.
  • Must be able to hear spoken words via telephone, cell phone or during individual or group meetings.
