New Jersey Natural Gas (NJNG), a subsidiary of New Jersey Resources, is seeking a Standards Engineer I to support the development, maintenance, and implementation of company standards, specifications, and regulated programs that promote the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of NJNG's natural gas distribution system. This role contributes to key initiatives involving Distribution Integrity Management (DIMP), corrosion control, materials standardization, pipeline safety compliance, and process improvement. The position works closely with Operations, Engineering, Training, Procurement, and contractor partners to ensure company procedures, materials, and practices align with regulatory requirements and operational best practices.
Major Responsibilities:
• Revise, update, and communicate company procedures and standards to support operational improvements, regulatory compliance, and industry best practices.
• Assist with the rollout of new and revised procedures to Energy Delivery operating departments and provide training and guidance to Company and contractor personnel as needed.
• Support pipeline integrity, corrosion control, and training programs by monitoring adherence to company procedures and standards in the field.
• Partner with Quality and Standards personnel to evaluate new materials, products, technologies, and work processes for potential implementation.
• Maintain Operator Qualifications related to departmental responsibilities, including Distribution Integrity Management (DIMP), Transmission Integrity Management (TIMP), and Cathodic Protection (CP) programs.
• Support a culture of safety by following approved safety practices, utilizing company-issued safety equipment, and promoting safe work procedures.
• Plan, coordinate, and monitor work activities to help ensure an accident-free workplace.
• Investigate defective materials, equipment issues, and ineffective work practices, identifying opportunities for improvement and corrective action.
• Maintain records of gas distribution materials that have been tested, approved, or rejected and provide administrative support to the Procedures and Materials Committee.
• Support Procurement in the development and maintenance of approved materials lists and specifications.
• Conduct periodic inspections of company and contractor storerooms to verify that approved materials are stocked and used within the gas distribution system.
• Assist with annual risk and threat assessments in support of the Distribution Integrity Management Program.
• Prepare regulatory reports and supporting documentation in accordance with federal, state, and company requirements.
• Perform field inspections and data reviews related to corrosion monitoring, integrity management, and material performance as assigned.
• Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by management.
Position Requirements:
• Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited college or university required.
• 0-2 years of relevant engineering experience required.
• Internship, co-op, or professional experience within the natural gas, utility, energy, construction, or related industry preferred.
• Knowledge of pipeline safety regulations, integrity management programs, corrosion control practices, or utility operations is a plus.
• Strong technical writing skills with the ability to develop, revise, and communicate procedures and standards effectively.
• Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to evaluate data, processes, and technical information.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with Operations, Engineering, Contractors, and cross-functional business partners.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments, prioritize work, and adapt in a changing operational environment.
• Ability to obtain and maintain required Operator Qualifications applicable to the position.

This position is deemed safety-sensitive under the U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s (PHMSA) regulations. Among other things, employees in this position are subject to drug and alcohol testing, including pre-employment testing, random testing, reasonable suspicion testing and post-accident testing. PHMSA-required drug tests include testing for marijuana. The use of marijuana, or testing positive for marijuana, is disqualifying and will lead to removal from performing safety-sensitive functions as well as disciplinary action.
Location type is Hybrid, 4 days on site, 1 day remote
Other Details:
Compensation: Expected base pay range for this role will be $70,500- $95,500.
Base pay is based on several factors including, experience, skills, and knowledge.
This role will be eligible to participate in an annual short term incentive program.
