Job Description

The Opportunity:

Canadian Natural is seeking a Stakeholder Relations Advisor with strong environmental and regulatory expertise to support stakeholder engagement aligned with regulatory requirements, environmental performance, and corporate sustainability objectives. The role works closely with regulatory, environmental, operations, and Indigenous relations teams to proactively manage relationships with regulators, Indigenous communities, and other external stakeholders, and to address issues related to energy development.

The ideal candidate brings a solid understanding of regulatory processes and environmental assessment frameworks, experience supporting regulatory submissions, and a respectful, collaborative approach to engagement with Indigenous communities. Success in this role requires clear communication of technical information, the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment, sound judgment and diplomacy, strong relationship‑building skills, and a willingness to travel as needed.

  • Job location: Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • Shift schedule: 4 x 3, 10-hour shifts (Monday – Thursday, site-based)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement stakeholder engagement strategies to support regulatory applications, environmental approvals, and project development activities
  • Build and maintain constructive relationships with regulators, indigenous communities, municipalities, industry groups, and other external stakeholders
  • Support environmental and regulatory processes, including:
    • Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs)
    • Provincial and federal regulatory applications
    • Public and stakeholder consultation requirements
    • Surface land activities
  • Coordinate and document consultation activities to ensure compliance with regulatory and environmental requirements
  • Identify, assess, and manage stakeholder issues and risks related to environmental, regulatory, and operational activities
  • Prepare briefing materials, presentations, consultation summaries, and correspondence for internal and external audiences
  • Collaborate with internal technical teams (environment, regulatory, operations, legal) to align messaging and address concerns
  • Monitor external issues, emerging regulations, and stakeholder trends that may impact Canadian Natural’s operations
  • Represent Canadian Natural at open houses, meetings, and external engagement forums as required
  • Ensure compliance with requirements set out in long-term agreements with external stakeholders responsible for stewardship

What You Bring to the Role:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, Communications, Public Policy, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in stakeholder relations, regulatory affairs, or environmental management or experience with indigenous communities including governance and protocols
  • Strong understanding of:
    • Alberta and/or federal environmental and energy regulatory frameworks
    • Environmental assessment and permitting processes
    • Stakeholder and public engagement best practices
