Job Description

The primary function of the Staff Utility Mechanic is to maintain, troubleshoot and repair all the site's mechanical and facility systems in a fast-paced DNA synthesis environment. They will support the site's goals by supporting the collecting of data, maintain documentation, troubleshoot, perform general, routine and preventative maintenance on all equipment, facility systems and support vendors and outside contractors during service calls as needed. The ideal candidate would be self-motivated and perform other production duties as required.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Capable of reading P&ID’s, schematics and detailed repair drawings related to equipment and machinery
  • Move equipment if required for repair or maintenance to avoid contamination or workplace safety hazards
  • Work with a range of hand tools including measuring tools, welding and brazing equipment.
  • Able to fabricate basic items used in manufacturing environments such as machine guarding, and conveyor supports.
  • Proficient utilizing Manual Milling Machines, Lathes, Brakes, Shears, etc…
  • Troubleshooting, repairing, inspecting and/or replacing mechanical components such as motors, reducers, drive chains, sprockets, sheaves, pulleys, rollers, conveyor belts, bearings, and transfer plates.
  • Align machines and equipment, using hoists, jacks, hand tools, squares, rules, micrometers, and plumb bobs.
  • Insert shims, adjust tension on nuts and bolts, or position parts, using hand tools and measuring instruments, to set specified clearances between moving and stationary parts.
  • Shrink-fit bushings, sleeves, rings, liners, gears, and wheels to specified items, using portable gas heating equipment.
  • Utilize a CMMS system to document the execution of corrective, reactive and preventative repair activities.
  • Operation, troubleshooting and repair of HVAC systems, Boilers, RO/DI Water Generation, Compressors and Vacuum Systems.
  • Safely utilize Forklifts, Powered and Non-Powered Trucks.
  • Execute Corrective, Reactive, Predictive and Preventative Maintenance on all Facility and Utility systems.
  • Support continuous improvement of Safety Procedures, Work Instructions and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Maintain Facility and Utility Critical Spare Parts
  • Work with mechanical contractors when they are on site
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Minimum Position Qualifications:

  • Understand and have a basic working knowledge of AC and DC electrical equipment such as batteries, control stations, fuses, motor starters, relays, switches, timers, servo driven equipment, photo electrical devices, transducers, Variable Frequency Drives (VFD’s) and encoders
  • Minimum of 2yrs experience with Welding, Machining and working with Sheet Metal
  • Minimum of 2yrs experience in troubleshooting, repairing, inspecting and/or replacing mechanical components for HVAC, Vacuum, RO Water, Boilers, Chillers, Cooling Towers and Compressors.
  • Minimum of 3yrs experience completing preventative maintenance on Utility and/ or Production equipment in a manufacturing facility.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be able to lift 40 lbs. on a regular basis.
  • Must be able to work from elevated heights, climb ladders and elevation platforms.
  • Must be able to work in clean room environment
  • Must be able to work with hand tools and basic machine shop equipment
  • Must be team oriented and self-motivated.
  • Must be familiar with Lock Out Tag Out
  • Must have basic computer skills and be able to complete spreadsheets, presentations and work within a CMMS system.
  • Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Minimum 18 years of age
  • High School Diploma or GED
