Job Description

Staff Software Engineer, Newsletter & Alerts Delivery

About the Team:

Our Technology team drives the evolution of our Technology, Engineering, Data, Product and User Experience functions. With a keen focus on delivering cutting-edge solutions, we shape the digital landscape for our customers, readers and users. From revolutionizing visuals to optimizing tools and harnessing the power of data, mobile, video and social platforms, our team is committed to providing a seamless and immersive experience across all touchpoints. Collaborating closely with our newsrooms and strategic partners, we spearhead the development of groundbreaking products and technologies.

About the Role:

Dow Jones is looking for a Staff Engineer to serve as a technical anchor for the high-volume delivery systems spanning email, mobile push notifications, SMS, and web alerts. This role is essential for ensuring the reliable, scalable, and timely distribution of content from leading brands like The Wall Street Journal, Barron's, and MarketWatch to millions of users. As a Staff Engineer, you will set the technical direction for the platform, drive decisions that span multiple teams, and raise the engineering bar through your work and influence.

You Will:

  • Drive the technical roadmap and architecture for high-scale messaging infrastructure (Email, Push, SMS), ensuring high availability, scalability, and sound system design.

  • Serve as the platform SME for integrations (e.g., Braze, Airship, Sailthru), optimizing for targeting, personalization, and deliverability.

  • Lead by example with hands-on engineering, contributing high-quality code to the team's most complex, high-risk initiatives.

  • Mentor and elevate the engineering team through active design/code reviews, technical guidance, and clear documentation.

  • Partner with cross-functional leadership (Product, Engineering, Infrastructure) to translate business needs into robust technical strategies.

  • Champion operational and engineering excellence, defining standards for testing, CI/CD, observability, and resilient incident response.

  • Pioneer responsible AI-augmented development (e.g., Copilot, Claude), setting team practices that balance velocity with risk management.

You Have:

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience, with a proven track record at a senior or staff level delivering complex, high-traffic backend systems.

  • Deep AWS and Node.js proficiency, including practical experience designing, operating, and defending scalable cloud architectures (e.g., Lambda, SQS, SNS, DynamoDB).

  • High-volume messaging expertise, with a strong technical understanding of email deliverability (SPF/DKIM/DMARC), native mobile push pipelines, and SMS systems at scale.

  • Advanced system design skills, with a demonstrated ability to architect reliable, low-latency systems that handle millions of daily messages with graceful degradation.

  • Strong technical communication and influence, capable of writing clear design docs, articulating trade-offs to non-technical stakeholders, and building alignment without authority.

Our Benefits

  • Comprehensive Healthcare Plans for you and your family (paid by Dow Jones)

  • Extra paid Time Off (30 days of holidays/year)

  • Possibility to work remotely for 3 months/year (desplazamiento program) or one week of remote work per quarter
