Job Description

Join the team redefining how the world experiences design.

Hey, hello, hiya, g'day, mabuhay, kia ora, 你好, hallo, vítejte!

Thanks for stopping by. We know job hunting can be a little time consuming and you're probably keen to find out what's on offer, so we'll get straight to the point.

Where and how you can work

Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you're near one), at home or a bit of both, it's up to you.

What you’d be doing in this role

As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.

  • You will drive technical strategy for data pipeline workflows, making trade-offs that balance short and long-term needs across multiple teams and domains
  • You will deeply understand “the 80% workflows” performed by platform engineers day-to-day and how these contribute to the broader mission
  • You will provide technical expertise to multiple teams and contribute to engineering standards and best practices across Canva
  • You will navigate complex stakeholder relationships, translating between technical and business needs while advocating effectively for engineering requirements
  • You will take significant ownership of configuration frameworks and infrastructure abstraction tools, leading improvements to code structure and reducing technical debt
  • You will define and roll out new tools, standards, and processes that improve engineering effectiveness across multiple teams
  • You will help build and develop the team through effective delegation, mentorship, feedback, and by identifying opportunities for others to grow
  • You will work alongside the team engineering lead to identify high-value opportunities and ensure the team’s roadmap is always pointing in the right direction

You're probably a match if

  • You have deep expertise with Python or Go programming languages
  • You have strong Computer Engineering / Science knowledge around fundamentals and first principles relating to concurrency, multithreading, data structures, architecture, and various design patterns
  • You have strong experience with AWS, and ideally GCP cloud environments
  • You have experience in platform engineering roles with demonstrated ability to work across multiple teams
  • You have experience with AI tooling for software engineering, such as Copilot or Claude Code
  • You have exceptional communication skills with ability to influence and build relationships across diverse stakeholders
  • You have proven ability to think strategically, connect external changes to strategy, and drive momentum on large initiatives
  • You have experience developing others, providing actionable feedback, and building high-performing teams

The Core Sync Team

The Data Platform Group aims to enable significant, scalable and sustainable value via data and insights, through building a world-class data platform and empowering Canvanauts with efficient & effective data capabilities.

And our Data Sync Team’s mission is to empower Canvanauts to deliver sustained value and innovation using data with ease, efficiency and confidence by providing Canvanauts with best-in-class platform infrastructure and services to manage data movement across various systems and data warehouse.

The staff engineering role is a unique blend of developer advocacy, product management and platform engineering. While writing code day-to-day is still a core activity, your impact will be realised by your ability to consult with Canva engineers to ensure that downstream platform teams will shape their roadmaps accordingly. You will deliver value to the business by ensuring that engineers have all the tools and systems at their fingertips to rapidly iterate on the platform and deliver new capabilities in response to changing business needs. Your ability for deep customer empathy and consultancy, in this a-typical software engineering role, will ensure your success and that of our engineers.

About Canva

We're a global online visual communications platform on a mission to empower the world to design. Featuring a simple drag-and-drop user interface and a vast range of templates ranging from presentations, documents, websites, social media graphics, posters, apparel to videos, plus a huge library of fonts, stock photography, illustrations, video footage, and audio clips, anyone can take an idea and create something beautiful on Canva on any device, from anywhere in the world.

Since our launch in 2013, we’ve had the crazy big goal of making design accessible to everyone. We were founded on the belief that people shouldn't need to understand complex software to unlock their creativity. We’re leveling the playing field and democratizing access to design and visual communication by empowering 100% of the world to communicate in a way that was once limited to the 1%.

We've always had a deeper mission surrounding Canva — which we talk about as our 'simple' two-step plan: to build one of the world’s most valuable companies, and to do the most good we possibly can. We're committed to our core value of Being a Force for Good, so as the value of our company grows, so too does our ability to have a positive impact on the world.
