As a Staff Software Engineer on the WEX Benefits Technology team, you will work in a high-demand environment where you will provide technical leadership while remaining hands-on with software development, troubleshooting, and problem solving. You will work closely with Product Managers, stakeholders, customers, and engineering teams to understand business challenges, define technical solutions, and deliver reliable and scalable software.
In this role, you will help coordinate the team's technical work, manage priorities, sprints, deliverables, development pipelines, project timelines, and resource allocation. You will provide technical guidance and help the team successfully execute projects while continuing to contribute directly to coding and solving complex technical problems.
This role requires a strong combination of technical leadership, project ownership, collaboration, and hands-on software engineering. You should have a strong understanding of project scope and timelines, be able to balance competing priorities, proactively identify risks and dependencies, and help drive successful delivery across the team.
You will also play an important role in the team's technology modernization journey. The current environment includes legacy .NET technologies that are expected to be modernized over time. The ability and willingness to work with existing technologies while contributing to modernization initiatives is an important requirement for this role.
● Provide technical leadership and guidance across the engineering team, helping coordinate technical priorities, tasks, and deliverables.
● Help manage sprints, project timelines, dependencies, risks, and delivery commitments using strong Scrum and Agile practices.

● Strong experience with Microsoft SQL Server, T-SQL, SSIS, and SSRS, including development, maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization.
● Experience with C# scripting within SSIS.

● Strong understanding of data structures and algorithms, object-oriented design, and problem-solving skills.

● Experience leading complex technical projects from planning through delivery.
● Track record of delivering complex projects on schedule.
● Experience in writing performant stored procedures and functions using T-SQL.
● Experience in developing Cloud-Native applications and services or willingness to quickly develop these skills.
● Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
● Experience with relational databases and modern data technologies.
● Experience with event-driven architectures and/or streaming technologies is a plus.
● You write clean, maintainable, scalable, and well-documented code.
● LLM Awareness: Familiarity with LLM concepts and frameworks like LangChain or LlamaIndex. Experience experimenting with or building basic RAG-based applications is a plus.
● Emerging Protocols: A desire to learn and implement new standards like the Model Context Protocol (MCP).
● Agentic Workflows: Interest in how autonomous agents function, including tool-use/function calling and state management.
● Agent Development: Familiarity with frameworks such as LangGraph or CrewAI and an understanding of the transition from static RAG to Agentic RAG.
● Data Retrieval: Basic understanding of vector databases such as Pinecone or Milvus and how search and retrieval quality impacts AI performance.
● AI-Ops: Interest or experience building AI-native features, including automated LLM-based evaluations within CI/CD pipelines.
● Continuous Improvement: Ability to identify opportunities to use AI to improve engineering productivity, automation, troubleshooting, testing, documentation, and operational efficiency.
● Cloud Consoles: Hands-on experience working in Azure or AWS services such as IAM, S3/Blob, compute instances, API Gateway, CDN, and Lambda, or willingness to quickly develop these skills.
● Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC): Basic experience with Terraform. Ability to read, modify, and deploy infrastructure modules is a plus.
● CI/CD Tools: Familiarity with GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, or Jenkins. Understanding of how to automate the build-test-deploy lifecycle.
● Observability: Basic experience with monitoring tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch, Azure Monitor, or similar cloud-native solutions.
● Experience managing and troubleshooting CI/CD pipelines, including YAML-based pipeline configuration.
● Education: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
● Technical Leadership: Proven experience providing technical leadership, coordinating engineering work, mentoring engineers, and driving technical decisions across a team.
● Project Leadership: Experience leading technical projects, with strong ownership of project scope, deliverables, dependencies, risks, resources, and timelines.
● Scrum: Strong experience working in Agile/Scrum environments, including sprint planning, daily stand-ups, backlog refinement, sprint reviews, and retrospectives.
