Metropolis is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to join the Customer Experience engineering team and help drive the company’s next growth phase. In this role, you will design and build scalable systems from the ground up, influence product direction, and mentor engineers across the organization.We are looking for hands-on engineers who thrive in fast-paced, high-growth environments and enjoy solving complex scalability and performance challenges. You will lead high-impact initiatives end-to-end — from architecture and design to production delivery — while balancing strong technical execution with product and business thinking.The ideal candidate brings deep experience building distributed systems, strong judgment around technical trade-offs, and the ability to connect engineering decisions to business outcomes such as reliability, customer experience, growth, and scalability. We value engineers who act as force multipliers through mentorship, technical leadership, and scalable engineering practices.This is a unique opportunity to help build an end-to-end mobility platform supporting millions of users across parking, aviation, fleet management, and other high-throughput use cases.

What You’ll Do

• Design, implement, and maintain the backend services that power the Metropolis platform

• Lead complex technical initiatives from ideation through production deployment

• Be a key part of the entire development lifecycle, including architecture discussions, requirements gathering, implementation, and delivery

• Drive technical discussions, evaluate new technologies, and ensure the platform continues evolving to support rapid growth and scale

• Leverage best practices in automated testing, CI/CD, and deployment processes to enable rapid iteration and reliable feature launches

• Build highly available, scalable, and resilient distributed systems

• Work directly with partners and internal stakeholders to build seamless integrations with the Metropolis platform

• Mentor and lead engineers across the organization and help raise the overall engineering bar

• Foster a culture of ownership, continuous improvement, and operational excellence

About You

• 10+ years of software engineering experience with advanced knowledge of Scala, Java, or related languages

• Proven track record designing and delivering large-scale distributed systems and high-volume consumer-facing applications

• Experience working in high-growth, fast-paced environments with strong execution expectations

• Deep understanding of microservices, event-driven architectures, and distributed systems design

• Attention to detail and engineering rigor are critical, especially when operating complex, high-throughput distributed systems.

• Strong understanding of engineering best practices across the full software development lifecycle, including TDD/BDD, CI/CD, testing, observability, and deployment automation

• Hands-on engineering mindset with the ability to contribute directly to implementation and solve highly complex technical problems

• Strong understanding of technical trade-offs related to scalability, performance, maintainability, and reliability

• Experience improving or re-architecting complex systems to support significant scale and performance gains

• Experience with database technologies, especially MySQL and PostgreSQL

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain highly technical concepts to both engineering and business stakeholders

• Strong mentorship and technical leadership skills, with a passion for enabling team-wide effectiveness and execution velocity
