Job Description

Position Definition

The incumbent will be conducting research related to multiple studies including cell isolation/culture, bacterial, fungal, and/or viral culture, tissue processing, histology/immunohistology, FACS, and gene/protein expression.

Essential Functions:

  • Perform human blood and tissue processing, including cell preparation, magnetic sorting, and culture
  • Plan and perform flow cytometry
  • Plan and perform RNA extraction and gene expression assays
  • Adjust reagents/platforms as needed
  • Prepare assays and equipment for research studies
  • Maintain cell line and primary cell culture including aseptic technique
  • Perform microbiological cultures including fungi, viruses, and bacteria as needed
  • Provide general laboratory support (maintain common lab supplies and reagents, order supplies, dispose of waste, update inventories)
  • Bring data into computing environments (e.g., R) as needed
  • Maintain accurate and detailed (electronic) lab notebook
  • Perform analyses of data and prepare data for presentation

Job Requirements:

  • Possess a BA/BS degree in Biomedical Sciences (biology, chemistry, human biology, or related field)
  • Prior experience in immunology or microbiology research preferred
  • Prior experience in mycology highly desired
  • Prior experience with R and Git preferred
  • Ability to learn and follow experimental protocols and SOPs
  • Strong track record for accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, tasks, and priorities to achieve desired goals
  • Strong interpersonal, written/oral communication, and organizational skills
  • Strong computer skills and ability to learn and use instrument-specific software applications
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team

Working Conditions/Environment:

The work environment for this position will include an indoor office and a medical research environment. It may include some minor annoyances such as noise, temperature variations, etc. The incumbent may sustain posture in standing or seated position and may utilize a computer (with external monitor, keyboard, and/or mouse as needed) for prolonged periods of time.

VA Onboarding Requirements:

NCIRE is an affiliate organization of the San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS), which requires all candidates to complete SFVA onboarding in addition to NCIRE's onboarding process. The SFVA is a federal agency that requires a federal background check, occupational health clearance, vaccines and immunizations, and drug testing for certain positions. Drug testing may include screening for marijuana which remains an illegal substance according to federal law. The failure to pass required drug testing will disqualify candidates from employment.

The base wage range for this position is $24.11 - $28.87 per hour. The wage actually offered to a successful candidate will take into account various relevant and non-discriminatory business factors including, without limitation, the candidate’s geographic location, job-related experience, knowledge, and skills, and education, as well as internal equity considerations. A successful candidate may also be eligible to earn additional compensation including bonuses.
