About the Role

The Staff Pharmacist is responsible for ensuring the safe, accurate, and compliant dispensing of prescription medications while serving as a trusted clinical resource for patients, providers, and pharmacy team members.

This role reviews and verifies prescription orders, conducts clinical consultations, performs drug utilization reviews, identifies potential medication-related risks, and ensures compliance with all applicable pharmacy regulations. The Staff Pharmacist also provides oversight and guidance to pharmacy technicians and supports daily pharmacy operations to ensure quality, safety, and service excellence.

In the absence of the Pharmacist-in-Charge (PIC), this position assumes Pharmacist on Duty responsibilities.

What You'll Do

Clinical Review & Medication Safety

  • Review, interpret, and verify prescription orders for accuracy and appropriateness.
  • Perform comprehensive Drug Utilization Reviews (DUR).
  • Evaluate prescriptions for:
    • Drug interactions
    • Allergies
    • Contraindications
    • Duplicate therapies
    • Incorrect dosing
    • Polypharmacy risks
  • Ensure medications are dispensed safely and in accordance with clinical best practices.
  • Stay current with evolving pharmaceutical therapies and treatment guidelines.

Patient Care & Consultation

  • Provide patient counseling and medication education.
  • Explain medication usage, dosing instructions, potential side effects, and therapy expectations.
  • Conduct clinical consultations to help patients manage their medication therapies effectively.
  • Promote safe medication use and adherence through proactive patient engagement.

Provider Collaboration

  • Communicate directly with prescribers to clarify prescription orders and resolve medication-related questions.
  • Collaborate with healthcare providers to ensure optimal drug therapy outcomes.
  • Facilitate prescription transfers in accordance with federal and state regulations.

Pharmacy Operations & Quality Assurance

  • Verify prescription accuracy within the pharmacy management system.
  • Perform final verification checks on prescriptions prior to dispensing and shipment.
  • Support pharmacy workflow efficiency while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Assist with inventory oversight to ensure medication availability aligns with patient needs.
  • Help identify, investigate, and resolve operational or medication-related issues.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with:
    • Federal pharmacy regulations
    • State Board of Pharmacy requirements
    • Controlled substance regulations
    • Company policies and procedures
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and safeguard protected health information (PHI).
  • Support accreditation, quality, and compliance initiatives as required.

Leadership & Team Support

  • Provide oversight, guidance, and mentorship to pharmacy technicians.
  • Support training and development efforts within the pharmacy team.
  • Serve as a clinical resource for technicians and operational staff.
  • Foster a collaborative, patient-focused environment.

What You'll Bring

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy from an ACPE-accredited College of Pharmacy or Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD).

Licensure

  • Active Pharmacist license in good standing with the applicable State Board of Pharmacy.

Experience & Skills

  • Experience in pharmacy practice, preferably within:
    • Mail-order pharmacy
    • Specialty pharmacy
    • Healthcare or managed care environments
  • Strong clinical knowledge and medication management expertise.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong customer service and patient engagement abilities.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to exercise sound professional judgment and maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong operational focus and attention to detail.
  • Ability to mentor and support pharmacy technicians.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and pharmacy management systems.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays as business needs require.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with pharmacy compliance, accreditation, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prior experience in:
    • Retail Pharmacy
    • Mail Order Pharmacy
    • Specialty Pharmacy
    • Pharmacy Benefit Management (PBM)
    • Managed Care
    • Pharmaceutical Industry
  • Knowledge of contemporary pharmacy practice and emerging clinical therapies.
  • Experience supporting quality assurance and patient safety initiatives.

Work Environment

  • Home-based work environment with periodic rotation to pharmacy operations facilities as needed.
  • Exposure to pharmacy production and warehouse environments, including machinery and operational noise.
  • Ability to sit and stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to bend, reach, kneel, and stoop as necessary.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and move containers weighing up to 15 pounds.
  • Ability to use visual acuity to operate equipment and review technical information.
