Job Description

The New York City Department of Correction (DOC) is an integral part of the City’s evolving criminal justice system, participating in reform initiatives and strategies aimed to move the City towards a smaller jail system without compromising public safety. The DOC is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for our employees, visitors, volunteers, and people in our custody. Importantly, safe jails enable DOC to provide people in custody with the tools and opportunities they need to successfully re-enter their communities. The DOC operates facilities and court commands across the five boroughs with more than 7,500 diverse professionals and knowledgeable experts.

The DOC is seeking to recruit a Staff Nurse to support the Health Management Division (HMD). Under executive direction and with latitude to exercise independent judgment, the successful candidate will provide the following:

- Manages and reviews charts for medical fitness for duty documents of departmental
employees requesting or returning from major leaves of absence for medical reasons,
or of employees reporting sick.
- Interviews and provides medical counseling to employees, reviews employee medical
documentation, labs and imaging reports for employees under his/her care on a timely
basis and make medical management decisions appropriately.
- Consults with HMD Physicians and recommends care and treatment to determine staff
eligibility of medical separation and / disability retirement.
- Serves as a consultant to physicians in the field of specialty; and perform related
duties as assigned. Liaison with DOC Trials/Legal Division, Work Compensation Division
and NYCERS.
- Handles special projects, including vaccines, reviewing of medical records for monthly
MMR report, prepare medical summaries and pre-promotion evaluations.
- Monitors hospitalizations, schedules medical appointments, execute telephonic and
in-person triages and serves as a physician chaperone (as needed).

Preferred Skills

- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of
correctional staff.
- Ability to exercise independent judgment, prepare written reports and documents.
- Excellent writing, communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in EKG and blood pressure administration.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel is a plus.
