Job Role Summary

The Staff Development Team Leader coordinates and delivers training, mentoring, and professional development for Housing and Neighborhood Health staff, including Environmental Health Specialists, Senior Environmental Health Specialists, and support staff. This role combines continuing staff development, field coaching, program oversight, and direct operational support to help ensure employees are confident, consistent, and effective in code enforcement, education, and outreach activities. The position also manages the hotel and motel inspection program and staff and partners with Housing leadership to support policy implementation, quality assurance, and departmental goals.

Day in the Life:

A typical day may include coaching staff in the field, leading hands-on training in the office, reviewing hotel and motel inspection activity, and mentoring employees through difficult enforcement or communication situations. This role regularly shifts between trainer, supervisor, field resource, and program partner to support both staff development and day-to-day public health operations.

Qualifications

Education

• Required: Bachelor’s degree
• Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, or a closely related field

Experience

• Required: 3-5 years of professional experience in Housing and Neighborhood Health, department-related code enforcement role, or closely related qualifying experience
• Preferred: Experience providing staff training, mentoring, field coaching, or program oversight in a public health or code enforcement environment

Licenses/Certifications Required

• Required: Valid Indiana Driver’s License
• Required: Must meet the standards outlined in the corporation’s driving policy and maintain reliable transportation for daily use

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working Environment

• Work is performed in office, field, and community settings, including hotels, motels, private residences, businesses, and court or hearing locations.
• Must be able to get in and out of a vehicle for frequent stops and climb stairs when conducting inspections or training activities.
• Must be able to lift at least 25 lbs. and possess physical stamina required for setting up and tearing down displays and conducting presentations. Activities include collapsing portable wagons and tables, moving/transporting equipment and supplies such as folding tables, chairs, boxes of client supplies, etc.
• Fieldwork may involve exposure to inclement weather, extreme temperatures, noise, poor lighting, and other challenging environmental conditions.
• Travel to and from field locations may subject worker to increased risk of driving hazards and damage or vandalism to personal vehicle
• Employees may occasionally interact with members of the public who demonstrate challenging, atypical, or hostile behavior.
• May be called upon to work irregular hours for occasional outreach activities.
