Job Description

The Schwarzman Animal Medical Center (AMC) is seeking a Staff Criticalist to join our team of ten that currently work in the Emergency and Critical Care (ECC) Department.

About Emergency & Critical Care at AMC

The AMC is one of the nation’s largest facilities for animal care, research, and education. The state-of-the-art hospital operates 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, with 55,000 patient visits annually. Over 140 veterinarians comprise the professional staff, representing all specialties, and providing a progressive, stimulating, and rewarding working environment.

The ECC Department is currently comprised of ten board-certified specialists in ECC, seven internship-trained emergency doctors, nine residents, 35 licensed technicians (several with their VTS in ECC), and 23 assistants. In our open new-renovated ICU, patients are co-managed by ECC and allied services or managed primarily by the ECC team. Our ER is at the hospital’s center, open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and has an active caseload of nearly 20,000 visits per year. AMC is the only VETCOT certified, Level 1 trauma center in the region.

The successful candidate will be expected to practice outstanding medicine, to assist in the training of residents and interns, and to contribute to the growth and development of the department internally and the specialty as a whole. The criticalist joining our team will be responsible for inpatient care, as well as participating in daytime and/or swing oversight of interns and residents in our busy ER. Inpatient management is well-supported with regards to LVT care and availability of advanced diagnostics and treatments, including invasive ventilatory support, dialysis, radiation therapy, and interventional procedures. Senior Veterinarians working in the ER share responsibilities of primary case receiving and detailed oversight of interns and residents seeing cases as well. The caseload, resources, and infrastructure are well-suited to individuals who are interested in teaching, collaboration, continuing to learn, and contributing to clinical research in a fast-paced environment.
