Job Description

About ALSO.

We’re ALSO, an electric mobility company originally conceived as a part of Rivian. We’re a passionate team of builders, dreamers, doers and innovators, focused on creating entirely new (not to mention, innovative and delightful) vertically integrated, small EVs designed to meet the global mobility challenges of today and tomorrow. Our mission is to inspire everyone to ride ALSO—replacing many local car, truck and SUV miles with ones on vehicles that are more affordable, more enjoyable and 10-50x more efficient.

As a Software Engineer in Test, Controls, you will serve as the developer infrastructure and test support engineer for the Controls team. You will define, build, and execute test strategies spanning software, hardware, and simulation environments, including MIL, SIL, HIL, and vehicle tests, while owning the CI/CD pipelines and test frameworks controls engineers rely on daily. You'll validate embedded systems and propulsion control modules, perform defect triage, and conduct system root-cause analysis, with a strong emphasis on Simulink/Stateflow model understanding and generated C code.

What You Will Do

  • Define comprehensive test strategies and architectures for new features and systems.
  • Translate requirements and system design into detailed test plans, test cases, and automation scripts.
  • Read and reason about Simulink models, Stateflow charts, and their generated/handwritten C code to design meaningful tests.
  • Architect and maintain CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, or similar) for controls software: model builds, code generation, static analysis, and automated test execution.
  • Support automated toolchains to generate, compile, and deploy Simulink/MATLAB code across multiple targets, including HIL lab hardware.
  • Build and maintain test automation frameworks (Python, scripting, MATLAB/Simulink, CAPL) and keep them healthy as the codebase evolves.
  • Execute MIL/SIL/HIL testing; analyze logs, telemetry, and vehicle CAN network data.
  • Act as dev infra support for the controls team: unblock engineers on tooling, build, and test-infra issues.
  • Collaborate across software, firmware, systems, and vehicle teams to resolve integration issues.

What You Will Bring

  • Bachelor's/master's degree in EE, CE, CS, or related engineering field.
  • 5+ years in embedded/automotive test engineering or dev infra roles.
  • Ability to read and understand Simulink models, Stateflow charts, and C code (generated or handwritten).
  • Strong experience with MIL/SIL/HIL/vehicle testing.
  • Hands-on experience architecting and maintaining CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, TeamCity, or similar).
  • Test automation and scripting expertise (MATLAB, Python, CAPL, Shell) and experience maintaining test frameworks over time.
  • Demonstrated experience with vehicle CAN networks, plus LIN and UDS.
  • Experience with debugging tools, telemetry analysis, and issue triage.
  • Strong communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

The salary for this position ranges from $225,000 - 275,000 per year, depending on experience, qualifications, and location.

Perks and Benefits

  • Robust health coverage. Excellent health, dental and vision insurance covered up to 100% by Also. with FSA & HSA options.
  • One Medical membership and dedicated insurance advocates.
  • Rich fertility and family building benefits with Progyny.
  • Flexible time off.
  • 401(k) match.

Why ALSO.

We’re passionate about helping the world find a better way to get there—wherever it is you’re headed.

We’re located in the heart of Silicon Valley and have brought together a world-class team from some of the biggest brands in the technology, automotive, cycling, outdoor recreation and retail spaces.

About ALSO.

We’re ALSO, an electric mobility company on a mission to build the world’s best small vehicles for moving people and goods, driven and autonomous. Originally incubated within Rivian, we’re rethinking transportation from first principles to create a new generation of smaller, smarter, and more connected electric vehicles.

Our team combines automotive rigor with advanced software, autonomy, sensing, and vertically integrated EV technologies to build products designed around the realities of modern mobility. We believe small vehicles are not a niche category, but a foundational shift in how people, goods, and communities will move through the world in the decades ahead.

At ALSO, details matter. We’re builders, technologists, designers, and dreamers who care deeply about craft, innovation, and the everyday experiences our products create. Because movement is more than transportation—it’s connection, culture, freedom, and collective impact.

We’re building that future now.
