Job Objective:

Provides direct patient care by making spiritual assessments; prioritizes spiritual care needs and provides timely spiritual care interventions based on assessments; provides spiritual counseling and addresses interfaith needs. Provides these same services for patients’ loved ones, for Eisenhower Health (EH) staff and volunteers, as requested. Prepares for and oversees appropriate rituals and services, sensitive to the needs of the interfaith community. Utilizes community spiritual leaders and volunteers to help meet the needs of patients, their loved ones, EH staff and volunteers. Counsels, supports and provides educational opportunities for EH staff and volunteers.

Education:
Required: Bachelor’s degree of Divinity or equivalent or religious degree from a seminary; endorsement by a religious body as a chaplain; four units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE) within three (3) years of hire date
Preferred: Master’s degree of Divinity or equivalent

Licensure/Certification:
Required: Board Certified Chaplain through Association of Professional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), National Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), and/or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care or in process of becoming Board Certified, and will attain certification within four (4) years of hire date

Experience:
Required: Three (3) years of experience in spiritual care

Preferred: Spiritual care experience utilizing bilingual Spanish/English skills

Reports To: Director-Spiritual Care Supervises: Volunteer Chaplain Assistants Ages of Patients: N/A Blood Borne Pathogens: Minimal/ No Potential

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

Ability to lead and train Volunteer Chaplain Assistants, Ability to operate general office equipment (i.e., computer, printer, scanner, telephone, etc.), Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time efficiently to meet deadlines, Ability to provide emotional/spiritual support to EH staff in response to organizational changes, Ability to provide nonintrusive counseling to support emotional and spiritual wellbeing of patients, their loved ones, EH staff and volunteers, Interpersonal skills, Possess a dynamic and conceptual knowledge of religious traditions, Skilled in supporting patients and families in end-of-life situations, Written and verbal communication skills

Essential Responsibilities

1. Demonstrates compliance with Code of Conduct and compliance policies, and takes action to resolve compliance questions or concerns and report suspected violations.
2. Oversees and ensures timely delivery of spiritual care to patients, visitors, staff and volunteers of all faith traditions.
3. Anticipates both spiritual and emotional needs of patients and their loved ones, and responds appropriately.
4. Trains and supervises Volunteer Chaplain Assistants in providing spiritual care to patients.
5. Provides spiritual care services with an interdisciplinary approach.
6. Maintains accurate records of spiritual services activities; documents visits and interventions appropriately, adhering to organizational standards; completes appropriate flowsheets and notes in the electronic medical chart (Epic) reporting on patient visits.
7. Assists patients and their loved ones in ethical decision making.
8. Responds promptly to requests for spiritual care visits and ritual sacramental needs; keeps scheduled appointments with patients.
9. Maintains an ongoing, caring relationship with EH staff and volunteers.
10. Provides spiritual counseling to patients, their loved ones, EH staff and volunteers when requested or required.
11. Shares “On-Call” responsibility with other chaplains and community clergy.
12. Conducts appropriate services as requested – rituals, memorials and general blessings.
13. Collaborates with Director of Spiritual Care to conduct training sessions for new and active members of the Spiritual Care team.
14. Supports an interdisciplinary and interfaith approach to spiritual care.
15. Maintains a good relationship with local clergy and leaders of all denominations and faith-based entities.
16. Refers patients, their loved ones, EH staff and volunteers to appropriate professionals, such as behavioral health professionals, for services beyond the scope of chaplaincy practice.
17. Assists local clergy in their hospital visitations.
18. Maintains endorsement in good standing by his/her faith group.
19. Maintains continuing education through academic studies, seminar, and workshop experiences.
20. Performs other duties as assigned.
